I'm also quite curious about THE SUN ALSO RISES.
THE DRUMMER - Sincere attempt, nice scenic and drumming scenes and excellent sound design. Also interesting to see Jaycee, Jackie Chan's son, played against his type. Otherwise, no big deal.

THE SUN ALSO RISES - Extreme responses from the critics and audience. Bizzarely comical characters and narrative structure have turned many off. To me, I just found it so enriching and imaginative to watch and reflect upon. Excellent technical achievement and deserved the Golden Horse Best Film Editing Award (Jiang Wen was a co-winner).

I agree totally with Siqin Gaowa getting the acting prize, she was very good.

Also nice to see Mad Detective getting something...
POSTMODERN LIFE OF MY AUNT made it to the film festival circuit since late 2006 and was nominated for several Golden Horse Awards (whose qualification principle is "by submission", not "by theatrical release"). However, as it was only released theatrically in HK in 2007, thus qualified for 2007 HK Film Critics Society Awards and 2007 HK Film Awards - I will post the nomination list of the latter awards.

I can understand Getting Home winning this. It is a lot of fun. I was hoping that it would have been China's official entry for the AMPAS Foreign Language category this year.

Best Picture: LUST, CAUTION

More trivia,

* In 1994, Tony Leung (CHUNGKING EXPRESS) and Joan Chen (RED ROSE, WHITE ROSE) won Best Actor & Actress Golden Horses respectively. The history has repeated after 13 years.
- Both of Joan's Golden Horse winning characters have similar names - nicknamed "Red Rose" in RED ROSE, WHITE ROSE and named "Rose" in THE HOME SONG STORIES.

* This is actually Joan Chen's 4th Golden Horse. Apart from being a two-time Best Actress winner, She has bagged Best Director & Best Adapted Screenplay awards for XIU XIU (1998). She is the first person who has won Golden Horses in these 3 categories.

* This is the second time that no Taiwanese actor/actress wins any acting award. (In 2002, the acting award winners were Leon Lai (mainland), Angelica Lee (Malaysia), Anthony Wong (HK) and Karena Lam (Canada). Though Karena was based in Taiwan since she was 15, it's up to ones to consider her a Taiwanese actress or not. So ... )

* Best Cinematography: Mark Lee Ping Bing's 5th Golden Horse (previously: THE PUPPETMASTER [1993]; SUMMER SNOW [1995]; IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE [2000]; MILLENNIUM MAMBO [2001])

* Best Film Editing: co-winner Jiang Wen's 3rd Golden horse (previously: Best Director & Best Adapted Screenplay for IN THE HEAT OF THE SUN [1996])
- Jiang Wen was also the first director who has won Best Film Editing Golden Horse for his own film (director Patrick Tam won the same award in 1994 for Wong Kar-wai's CHUNG KING EXPRESS)

* Best Sound Effects: co-winner Du Tuu-Chih's 6th Golden Horse (previously: SUPER CITIZEN [1985]; DUST OF ANGELS [1992]; THE PUPPETMASTER [1993]; GOOD MEN GOOD WOMEN [1995]; MILLENNIUM MAMBO [2001])

* Best Action Chereography: Donnie Yen's 2nd Golden Horse (previously: TWINS EFFECT [2004])

* Best Art Direction: 1st Thai Golden Horse winner

* Best Original Score: 1st Frenchman Golden Horse winner

Jury report:

* There was a revamp of the judging process in this year. This time round, the winners were decided by jurors' scorings, not by poll. The aggregated scores given by the preliminary- and final-rounds of juries weight half each. In each round, the jury first discussed about the candidates performances. They then gave scores individually. No more rounds and rounds of voting and elimination process to decide winners.

(The system:
- Best Pic, Short Film, Formoz Awards: Preliminary scoring by 21 jurors ; 7 more international jurors to contribute to the final round of scoring
- Other awards: x number of jurors [for acting awards, x = 5; the rest, x = 3] who are adept in the respective occupations as preliminary jurors; 7 more jurors to join in the final round
- in each round, each jury scores a candidate in the scale of 50-99)

* Best Pic: LUST, CAUTION had been the overwhelming favorite all the way

* Best Director: Tight fight between Lee Ang and Jiang Wen (recall that Jiang Wen was a replacement nominee after two nominated directors pulled out). Lee eventually won the award with a small margin. According to the final-round jury, Lee is good at interpreting the drama and the characters, while Jiang is aesthetically innovative.

* Best Supporting Actress: Fan Bing Bing wasn't even discussed during the final-round jury discussion. She won because she received very high scores during the preliminary round (could be someone who scored Bing Bing 99 points and the rest 50 points each!). The final-round jury preferred Chang Chun Ning. The rest of the nominees: EYE IN THE SKY's Maggie Siu's screentime was relatively brief while SECRET's Alice Tzeng is, according to the jury, "a very beautiful girl"! (Yes, I personally wonder why she was nominated)

* Best Supporting Actor: Mainly Tony Leung Ka-fai vs. PROTEGE's Louis Koo

* Best Actor: Tony Leung Chiu-wai vs. Zhao Ben Shan

* Best Actress: As Tang Wei was a double nominee for Best Actress & Best New Performer, the final-round jury decided to discuss both categories at once. Tang certainly has a bright future and therefore the Best New Performer award is no doubt hers. On the other hand, Joan Chen's performance is all-rounded not only in THE HOME SONG STORIES but also LUST, CAUTION and THE SUN ALSO RISES. She deserves her second Best Actress award.

The revamped Golden Bauhinia Awards' qualifying period is Aug 2006-Jul 2007. For this year's case, they have also accepted unreleased films which were submitted by their producers (I think they are going to revise this new rule in the next year due to huge controversy).
