rain Bard (and the rest who bother), check out Yasmin Ahmad's commercial. Simple and yet powerful. Available on YouTube,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw0s4C0g5SM

Darn, watching the commercial made me realize that how much I missed my father (just as when I watched the final scene of THE DEPARTURES), who passed away last August.

The number of votes among these films are pretty close. GUBRA hits our heart core as being the natives in an semi-Islamic region where many Muslims "get caught" in between their longing for modern, globalized lifestyles and their faith towards the relatively orthodox side of the religion, we could sense their pain. Furthermore, GUBRA is a sequel of the more popular and accessible SEPET, which we have developed our affections on the main characters, Orked and Jason. When I watched GUBRA, I felt missing a close friend Jason as much as Orked (in the film) does. On the other hand, Orked is no doubt director Yasmin Ahmad's altered ego (if you know Yasmin's own real-life story). We feel affectionate toward Orked just like our feeling toward Yasmin herself, a carefree Muslim who comes from a family that never cease to amaze and amuse us. According to Yasmin, Orked is a hybrid of Yasmin, her sister and her mother.

I wonder whether you have seen MUKHSIN, the film Yasmin Ahmad made after GUBRA, which probably marks the end of Orked trilogy (as hinted by the unforgettably beautiful end credit sequence). I was so amazed that Yasmin could turn a supposedly poetic realism film into a heart-warming/wrenching magical realism film in a seemingly ordinary kite flying scene - you would understand what I mean only if you have seen both SEPET and GUBRA before watching MUKHSIN (i.e., if you don't watch the trilogy with the sequence of the year of releases, you won't be able to tell). The astonishing thing is that if you watch these three films with your heart, not your film aesthetic mind, you would interpret the characters or their life stories differently if you watch them in different sequences - first of all, make sure that you stay till the scene-after-end-credits of GUBRA.

According to the Singapore-based film forum that I've been participating in, a couple of hardcore Singaporean Yasmin Ahmad fans (note that they are neither Malays nor Muslims, and they are typical arthouse movie fans) made a special trip to Kuala Lumpur to attend the Malaysian Premiere of GUBRA and presented Yasmin bunches of flowers, AFTER they have seen the film several times at Singapore cinema (many of Yasmin's films were theatrically released in Singapore before Malaysia, prompting her to consider making a film in Singapore).

I didn't list the full nomination list. It was nominated but failed to make it to Top-3 in the Best Director poll.
