I edited my lists alphabetically to make them more readable, including those mentions by Penelope for 1976 and 2003 that I would have included anyway had I realized they belonged in those years.

As an aside, two major Oscar nominees of 1976, Face to Face and Cousin, Cousine are not available in any home video format at the present time, which I suppsoe puts them at a disadvantage.

Fog of War, Latter Days and Dogville were only shown at film festivals in the U.S. in 2003 and did not open in L.A. until 2004. Callas Forever was only shown at film festivals in 2003 and 2004 and then went to video so it isn't eligible in any year.

We go off commercial release dates, Penelope. Festival appearances don't count (or there are several films from the last 5 years that wouldn't have been eligible the years they were nominated).

Polanski's The Tenant is also a 1976 release.

By the way, I'm not sure if Ossessione should count as a '76 film or a '77 film; according to IMDb, it played the NY Film Festival in '76, but wasn't released commercially until '77.

Voyage of the Damned has a certain camp quality that is enjoyable (sort of like watching Airport 1975). And there are so few Katherine Ross movies out there, I'd never throw one under the bus. It's always fun to see Lee Grant going ballistic with that pair of scissors, too.

Grey Gardens is essential viewing for any cinemaphile. Just a fascinating film.

But documentaries have gotten major nominations in two of three years we have done, so maybe he should check them out. Both are certainly far superior to Rocky!

It's impossible to see everything. The essentials on Penelope's list that I overlooked are Cousin, Cousine; Fox and His Freinds and Face to Face, along with All the President's Men, Bound for Glory, Carrie, Marathon Man, The Marquise of O, Network, Next Stop, Greenwich Village, The Omen, Rocky, Seven Beauties, The Shootist, Small Change, The Spirit of the Beehive, Taxi Driver, Robin and Marian, The Ritz, The Front, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Obsession from my original list. Some such as A Star Is Born, Voyage of the Damned and Lipstick you should watch only if you're feeling particularly masochistic.

Grey Gardens and Harlan Country, USA shoudl both be seen, but since they are documentaries and we are not doing documentaries, you may want to put them on a back burner for now.

I don't think I've seen any of those listed. Looks like another year of preservation for me.

I have some more titles for 1976, but I'll need to double-check when I get home from work...mostly foreign titles that I'm not entirely sure of release date.
