Since reading your responses, I found that the above website has copies of The Leatherneck and A Cage of Nightingales.

Big Magilla,

If The Dark at the Top of the Stairs is on YouTube, I surely cannot find it there. Would you mind posting it in a link below?

Also, does TCM play this one?

Thanks!

Wow! Thank you! And anyone else who wants to weigh in, I am curious about the Foreign Films too.

I want you to know that I posted this list a very long time ago and I don't think so many of these films were available then on DVD. Certainly, no one responded with a post like yours!

Thanks!

I've got nothing on the Foreign Film nominees, but it's worth keeping an eye on overseas DVD/Blu-Ray markets. There's one label (Second Run) in the UK that seems to specialize in lesser-known European films. They've put out some high-profile films like The Shop on Main Street, but most of their releases are lesser-known films that (in many cases) didn't get much release outside of their home countries. They release new titles on a pretty regular basis, so it's always worth keeping an eye on their release schedule.

Always happy to help people track things down. Here's what I've got:

RELATIVELY EASY TO SEE:

A Ship Comes In, The Letter, Sarah and Son, The Trespasser, Holiday, Laughter, and The Royal Family of Broadway are on YouTube.

Weary River, The Dawn Patrol, These Three, Arise, My Love, Mister 880, and Seven Days to Noon are on DVD.

The Bold and the Brave is on iTunes.

The Patent Leather Kid, Thunderbolt, The Valiant, The Big Pond, Skippy, Lady and Gent, Escape Me Never, Private Worlds, The Scoundrel, They Knew What They Wanted, Come Fill the Cup, and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs are available from second-hand DVD sales sites. (A lot of these have also shown up on TCM recently.)

REQUIRES BEING IN THE RIGHT CITY:

Glorious Betsy, The Barker, East Lynne, and The White Parade are available to screen at the UCLA Film Archive in Los Angeles.

Sorrell and Son is available to screen at the Academy's archives in Los Angeles.

The Noose is available to screen at MoMA in New York.

I GOT NOTHING:

A copy of Drag exists at the UCLA Film Archive, but it is not available to screen, so I don't know how one would see it.

I have never been able to track down The Private Life of Helen of Troy, The Cop, The Leatherneck, Sal of Singapore, Skyscraper, Wonder of Women, and A Cage of Nightingales.

The Way of All Flesh, The Patriot, and The Rogue Song are widely believed to be lost, I believe.

Rare Films - Can anyone help me?

Post by Movielover »

Hello All,

I don't think I have posted on the board in like 7 years, but I was an active member years ago.

Below are a list of films I am looking to watch but I don't know where to find them. They would all be classified as rare films, and all are Oscar nominees. I am not a true Oscar completist, but I do want to see everything in the major categories, which I realize is impossible.

Foreign Film Category (these are the only films left I have yet to see from this category. I find it interesting that so many films from Spain have not been made more accessible):
The Truce (Argentina)
Paix sur les Champs (Belgium)
Arms and the Man (Germany)
What Happened to Santiago (Puerto Rico)
Hungarians (Hungary)
The Village on the River (Netherlands)
Paw (Denmark)
Viva Italia! (Italy)
The Important Man (Mexico)
Tlayucan (Mexico)
Live for Live (France)
Hoa-Binh (France)
Immortal Love (Japan)
Twin Sisters of Kyoto (Japan)
Portrait of Chieko (Japan)
The Road a Year Long (Yugoslavia)
The Ninth Circle (Yugoslavia)
Three (Yugoslavia)
Placido (Spain)
Los Tarantos (Spain)
El amor brujo (Spain)
My Dearest Senorita (Spain)
Doulbe Feature (Spain)
Course Completed (Spain)
Volver a Empezar (To Begin Again) (Spain)

Other Rare Films:
Glorious Betsy
The Noose
The Patent Leather Kid
The Private Life of Helen of Troy
A Ship Comes In
Sorrell and Son
The Way of All Flesh
The Barker
The Cop
Drag
The Leatherneck
The Letter (1929)
The Patriot
Sal of Singapore
Skyscraper
Thunderbolt
The Valiant
Weary River (I think this is on TCM but I haven't seen it)
Wonder of Women
The Big Pond
The Rogue Song
Sarah and Son
The Trespasser
The Dawn Patrol
East Lynne
Holiday (1930)
Laughter
The Royal Family of Broadway
Skippy
Lady and Gent
The White Parade
Escape Me Never
Private Worlds
The Scoundrel
These Three
Arise, My Love
They Knew What They Wanted
A Cage of Nightingales
Mister 880
Come Fill the Cup
Seven Days to Noon
The Bold and the Brave
The Dark at the Top of the Stairs

ANY help is appreciated!
