Reluctantly changing my vote from Irene Dunne to Katharine Hepburn to break a three-way tie between them and Janet Gaynor.

Alice Adams is not my favorite Hepburn performance by a long shot but she has to show up here somewhere. She came within one vote of tying Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard in the third decade for Summertime, which means that Swanson has now beat the two greatest actresses of Hollywood's golden age for the same performance. She first beat Bette Davis in All About Eve to win the year and now Hepburn to win the decade.

Some excellent choices here though some, Garbo, Hepburn certainly, gave better performances in better films than those noted here.

My vote goes to the under-rated Irene Dunne in the quintessential screwball comedy, The Awful Truth.
