The link was to someone's private collection on his blog. Yes had subtitles.

Someone had put up a link to it on Facebook on some movie page. It was eventually removed.

Movie Detective have added A Cage of Nightingales (1945) nominated for a screenplay Oscar to their catalogue. And it will have optional English subtitles.

Movie Detective have another nominee available, though its not listed on their site (an email requesting invoice to pay is needed to obtain the film). The film is Arms and the Man (1958) German title 'Helden'.

I saw Whatever Happened to Santiago on its initial cinema release. I am not aware of any subsequent home video release for that title.

I saw Three a number of years ago on DVD. I managed to find a copy on eBay with English subtitles. There happens to be a copy of Three (original title Tri) on eBay at the moment but it appears to be a Spanish disc with no English subtitles.

Precious Doll (and anyone else who can answer this),

You have a list of films you are waiting to see. I notice that the Yugoslavian film Three is not on this list nor is the Puerto Rican film What Happened to Santiago, which means you have somehow tracked them down and seen them. How did you get a hold of these films? They are elusive to me.

Of the ten films you list, I will soon be seeing El amor brujo (the Beleta version) at NYU's Bobst Library. They have a copy there you can view in house. I also saw Sandakan No. 8. There was a video rental store in NYC (not sure if it was Kim's or Baywear) that carried it, and I was able to see it.

Thanks!

Reza wrote:Finally caught up with Spain's first foreign film Oscar winner - "Volver a empezar". Johann Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major" & Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" are both to this film what "Lara's Theme" is to Dr Zhivago. Was it the music that won over Academy members because the film is such a minor piece of fluff? And deathly slow. Jarring comic scenes clash with the warm but bittersweet sequences depicting an old man's return to his hometown after years as he connects with an old flame and an old buddy. Antonio Ferrandis as the old man is extremely good though.

I haven't seen three of the other nominees for that year (1982) but the french entry - Bertrand Tavernier's "Coup de Torchon" - is a way better film with wonderful performances by Philippe Noiret, Isabelle Huppert and Stéphane Audran.
Very weak line-up, though it is surprising in retrospect that the Academy didn't award the Tavernier film. I do remember seeing To Begin Again, released in cinemas because of its win and thinking WTF - how did that win. I would have voted for Alsino and the Condor, a crudely made but rather topical film in its day. Flight of the Eagle is very minor Troell and though I found Private Life rather dull it had it admirers back in its day.

I'm now down to 'only' ten films from the Foreign Language category to see:
