A new voting system for a new age. A simple majority on a first ballot was good for a win – the select few who qualified for that are indicated with * before their names/films. After that, the critics submitted weighted ballots with 1-2-3 choices listed. There were some arcane rules about needing a majority of critics to at least mention the film/performance in question (I seem to remember James Mason actually led round two of the 1972 best actor balloting, but fell short on that technicality, requiring further voting and bringing about the Olivier win). And there were occasional runoffs, as you'll see noted. But for the most part it was a simple matter of garnering the most combined votes from this weighted voting.

For years, it was tradition at the Times to print full statistics. For purposes of this file, my anality was limited to typing in the top three finishers, except in cases where the info was not provided, or when there was something beyond the three that interested me enough to note.

For whatever reason, this tradition abruptly ceased in 1983. I remember going out to pick up the night-before early edition of the Times, and thinking the voting must have missed their deadline, because in two scans of the arts section I found no report. Finally, I located a tiny item that listed winners and nothing more. So, for that year and ones just following, I had to scrape up (or infer) what info I could. Later on, reporting votes became more common, though, as you'll see, it varied from year to year.

Welcome to the film generation era – a time generally thought of as a high point for American films, when the critics, contrarily, were in love with overseas entries.
