No, it's not, Damien. :p I probably wouldn't pay $18 to see it. To own on Blu-Ray, sure.

I paid $18 for Inception (unbeknownst to me when we got to the theatre it was IMAX), and it's the worst movie of 2010.

Even though I qualify for senior discounts, I mostly catch bargain matinees where the "bargain" price is now around $6.50.

12-13 dollars?! In Italy the price of a ticket goes from 5 euros (weekdays) to 7.5 euros (weekends), and people complain because it's too expensive...
In LA, I've paid $16 -- and that's not for 3D or IMAX.

I must admit I wasn't recommending it to you, Tee, based on your past reaction to Leigh – as you've said, it's not as conspicuous as Damien's – but based on, well, demographic reasoning. AY is such a mature, compassionate and perceptive view of life which has already been lived for at least a while. It's an adult film. And it offers an extremely captivating portrayal of marital bliss on the way.

As for Mike Leigh's opus – I've said it before, I love his films when they are not "a Mike Leigh movie". I have problems with his hard core social conscious ones – Life is Sweat, Naked, Career Girls, All or Nothing all have the kind of over awareness, they seem to immerge out of a preconceived agenda rather than an organic narration. The results in these cases might be conceived as unpleasantly acid and condescending I'm afraid. But when his films seem to be driven by another motivation, or at least by a more complex one – his social awareness is always present – the results are richer and much more satisfying. The melodramatic seed of Secrets and Lies, the artistic process in Topsy-Turvy, the reincarnation of time, place and human milieu in Vera Drake, the original character study that Happy-Goes-Lucky is – each one of these films becomes a unique and intriguing piece.

AY is in many ways the freest film Leigh has ever made. No, it's not a narrative driven movie, certainly not in a boy-stammers-boy-meets-therapist-boy-becomes-king-boy-and-therapist-bit-the-Nazies kind of way. But in its particular way, AY does have a very formalistic structure. It's like a musical piece, comprised of repetitions and variations, harmony and dissonance. And it offers such a wide array of human dramas, tragedies and joys by simply observing the most deceptively banal, every day actions and rituals as made by a bunch of human beings. Nothing more, nothing less.

Top tier: Naked, Life is Sweet, Happy-Go-Lucky (I just heard you cringe, Mister Tee)

Second: Topsy-Turvy, High Hopes, Bleak Moments, Another Year

Third: All or Nothing, Vera Drake

Worse: Career Girls.

Okay, so Vera Drake is not my least favourite.
