Simple lack of room, Magilla. In any year where I'd nominate her, she's up against a performance that, for my money, is an easy winner.

Nice list, Bruce, my number one or two choices in most cases, but why no love for Julie Andrews?

Precious, it's Anna May Wong, not Chong.

Although the Criterion DVD packaging refers to Falconetti as Renee, she was billed only by her last name in The Passion of Joan of Arc, and is generally known by her stage name of Maria Falconetti, not Renee, a name she was billed as in a supporting role in a 1917 French film.

Simple. On my “Oscar” list, I followed the academy rules. Room at the Top was released in the States in 1959, the same year as The Nun Story. Hepburn was superb, Signoret at least equally so, and since I like her so much and this was my only chance to honor her on this list, I went for her. On the “international” list I went by the year the films were released originally. RatT was a 1958 release in the UK, so Signotert, with two awards to her name already, lost to the mesmerizing Riva.

Great choices Uri (though, great as Stockard Channing is, I'm quite sure that Holly Hunter really gave the best performance of 1993, and one of the best of that decade). But how can Audrey Hepburn be the best actress of 1959 in any language if she loses to Simone Signoret in your English-speaking list?

Now, I didn’t cheat. ’57, ’75, even ’78 – these are indeed miserable years when it comes to finding impressive performances by leading actresses in English speaking films, (and for that matter so is this year). Does it mean that miraculously, only on those particular years actress in “foreign” films gave award worthy performances? I don’t think so. We should make up our mind. Either we stick to English speaking movies, the way I always campaign for, or truly embrace world wide cinema, on which I don’t pretend to be as well informed the way I am when it comes to mainstream English speaking movies. So the following list is more of a name dropping exercise than a real evaluation (for a start, it's still depresingly a very ethnocentric list), but it gives an idea of what I think an “open” list should look like.
