Man, I watched this just a week or two ago and there's no way I'd file Asher in support. She's in the film nearly as much as John Moulder Brown and, honestly, she's a more dominant force on screen than him.

However, your list is fire. Great selections.
Yeah she's definitely borderline, but I tipped her to support considering she's the 'object' of the film's drama and never its subject - part of the reason why her mysterious performance works so well.

Yep, I did put those titles down wrong.

And as for National Velvet and 1944...sorry Margaret O'Brien. I loved her in Meet Me In St. Louis, but Revere is one of the greatest of all screen mothers. As for my new 45 winner...not sure who would be next in line. I haven't really gone deeply enough into 1945 to have a list yet. Maybe Blondell or Garner from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Would have to watch it again to know for sure; It's been awhile, and while I thought both were excellent, I don't remember strongly preferring one to the other.
1945's a terrific year -- you have a lot to look forward to.

My top 5 Supporting Actresses:

1. Constance Collier in Kitty
2. Martha Sleeper in The Bells Of St. Mary’s
3. Margaret Rutherford in Blithe Spirit
4. Gladys Cooper in Love Letters and The Valley Of Decision
5. Ann Blyth in Mildred Pierce

Flora Robson's essentially in blackface in Saratoga Trunk playing Ingrid Bergman's mixed race Haitian servant, and it's a performance you sort of think you should laugh at; however, she ends up stealing practically the entire movie. A servant who is anything, but servile. A really different, fun performance in a vastly overlooked film.

1945 was a great year for supporting actresses. Blondell and Garner do indeed hold up to multiple viewings as do Beulah Bondi as the cantankerous great-mother in Renoir's The Southerner; Gladys Cooper in two completely different roles in Love Letters and The Valley of Decision; Geraldine Fitzgerald as the hypochondriac sister in Sidomak's Strange Affair of Uncle Harry.

Also worth considering: Fay Bainter in State Fair; Billie Burke in The Cheaters; Agnes Moorehead in Our Vines Have Tender Grapes; Margaret Rutherford in Blithe Spirit; Flora Robson in Saratoga Trunk and Angela Lansbury in The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Some nice choices - it's great to see the lovely Barbara Britton finally acknowledged by someone.

She really should've been nominated. What a fantastic (and hilarious) performance. Small Time Crooks is probably my favorite of Allen's admittedly shitty early '00's output.
