The list has been updated post-Feb. 25, with The Departed inserted at No. 30, and other various other tweakings amid the rankings. It's still the most arbitrary ranking I've ever seen. We could all go on and on--Marty at 6, It Happened One Night at 23? It's obviously a flawed formula they used.

The top 80 movies on the imdb looked better than this.

I looked through the list and was amazed at some of the placement...Driving Miss Daisy is better than most of the films above it.

And how the hell are The Best Years of Our Lives, Marty, Wings, An American in Paris and The French Connection among the top 20? Blech.

I must give them props for including Sunrise in the list and happy to see it so high on the list.

Any list that has Marty at number 6 and How Green Was My Valley at 52 is inherently worthless, not to mention all the other rank stupidity on view here.

American Beauty is listed twice--at 42 and 36. The 36 slot is actually Million Dollar Baby.

Ok, I've looked at this list 5 times and still don't see Million Dollar Tranny. I can only guess that the powers bestowed upon The Goddess Whose Beauty And Talent Enhances The Universe And Is Known To Mere Mortals As Kate Winslet have erased the memory of that film starring The Agent of Satan, Worshipped By His Minions, And Known To Mere Mortals As Hilary Swank.

Rotten Tomatoes has compiled their ranking of Best Pictures based on the reviews of the film. Here is their convoluted scoring system. It seems to me this hurts modern films, which have more reviews:

" Here's how the Best of the Best Pictures works:
• Each critic from our discrete list gets one vote, all weighted equally.
• A movie must have 10 or more rated reviews to be considered.
• Reviews without ratings are not counted toward the results.
• Because reviews are continually added, manually and otherwise, we have a cutoff date at which new reviews are not counted. This year's cutoff date is 2/12/2007."
• We use a weighted formula (Bayesian) to account for variation in the number of reviews per movie. The winners are determined by the rankings, designated as the "adjusted score," after applying said formula:

(r ÷ (r+m)) × t + (m ÷ (r+m)) × a, with "r" representing the number of rated reviews, "m" the minimum number of reviews needed for a movie to qualify, "t" the Tomatometer score, and "a" the average Tomatometer of all the qualifying movies"

And their list, in backwards order.
