Oscar Nominees for playing a Gay Character - A Minor Research
Sevigny's character falls for Swank before she finds out the secret, which is revealed to her during their big love scene. That she doesn't react negatively could be viewed as her being gay, but maybe she just wanted to be loved.

Maybe he meant for Silkwood?
I can't think of any others right off, although when I first saw it a few years ago, I was surprised that Judith Anderson's character in Rebecca seemed to be a pretty open lesbian.
I think the film left it somewhat open as to whether the Judith Anderson character lusted after Rebecca, or just platonically worshipped her.

Meryl Streep wasn't nominated for The Hours.
Also there's Charlize Theron in Monster, James Coco in Only When I Laugh (one of the worst movies ever nominated for multiple Oscars), and Marcello Mastroianni in A Special Day. Five or six years ago, in their special Oscar issue, Entertainment Weekly did a piece on gay characters that were nominated.

I'm not sure but this might be a list of performers that scored a nomination por playing a Gay/Lesbian or Bisexual Character:
- Kathy Bates, Primary Colors
- Cher, Silkwood
- Tom Courtenay, The Dresser (I'm not sure, hardly remember the film itself)
- Bruce Davison, Longtime companion
- Javier Bardem, Before Night falls
- Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain
- Tom Hanks, Philadelphia
- Ed Harris, The Hours
- Salma Hayek, Frida
- Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
- William Hurt, Kiss of the Spider Woman
- Tommy Lee Jones, JFK
- Catherine Keener, Being John Malkovich
- Greg Kinnear, As good a s it gets
- Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
- Ian McKellen, Gods and Monsters
- Meryl Streep, The Hours
- Hillary Swank, Boys don’t cry
- Felicity Huffman, Transamarica (by definition, shouldn't be in this list, but...)
Other memorable gay characters that actually could have made it:
- Michael Caine, California Suite
- Rupert Everett, My Best Friend's Wedding
- Matt Damon, The Talented Mr. Ripley
- Nathan Lane, The Birdcage
Don't know wheather to include Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore, both for The Hours.
I'm not very good in researchs, specially on older films. Am I missing someone?
