Thanks for posting that Magilla - some very interesting data.

Longest & Shortest Nominated Performances

Post by Big Magilla »

This topic has come up numerous times over the years but there is now a definitive up-to-date site that lists the longest and shortest performances of all nominated actors and actresses by year by both length and percentage of screen time.

https://www.screentimecentral.com/

Some of this is quite fascinating.

For example, Ingrid Bergman's second Oscar win (for Anastasia) was the shortest of the performances nominated in her category that year, but her third win for what some saw as a cameo (for Murder on the Orient Express) was the longest of the performances nominated in her category that year.

The longest:

The list of the ten longest nominated performances to the list of percentage of screen time in each category varies drastically. There are no matches in Best Actor although Will Smith makes both lists in separate performances. Only Liv Ullmann makes both Best Actress lists in the same film while Meryl Streep make both lists with separate performances.

Only Richard Burton, Gene Hackman and John Ireland appear on both lists for the same films for Best Supporting Actor. No one appears on both lists in separate films.

Rooney Mara, Tatum O'Neal, Patty Duke and Alicia Vikander all make both lists for the same films for Best Supporting Actress. No one appears on both lists in separate performance.

The shortest:

The list of the ten shortest nominations to percentage of screen time adheres more closely with seven of the nominees for Best Actor appearing on both lists. Marlon Brando is the only one listed for separate performances for percentage of screen time thanks to The Godfather which does not qualify as one of the shortest for screen time. Spencer Tracy tops both lists with his performance in San Francisco.

Nine of the performances nominated for Best Actress appear on both lists albeit in a different order. Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest tops the lists for percentage of screen time, but she's sixth for length.

Seven of the ten shortest performances nominated for Best Supporting Actor appear on both lists. John Lithgow in Terms of Endearment has the shortest percentage of screen time, but is fourth on the list for length.

Seven out of the ten shortest performances nominated for Best Supporting Actress appear on both lists as well. Hermione Baddeley in Room at the Top tops both lists with her 2:19 minute performance. In fact, the top 8 actresses listed have less screen time than any of the performances nominated in any of the categories.

There is also a comparison list of 21 films for the actor or actress with the longer screen time was nominated in the supporting category while the one with the shorter screen time was nominated in the lead category.
