With Don Murray passing away, the earliest Supporting Actor nominee still alive is Russ Tamblyn, who’s also active on Twitter.

Added a couple of records for good measure. The earliest all 20 acting nominees are still alive is quite recent: 2001. If we add Best Director to that, the earliest is 2003.

Good point. Clearly, I didn't think this one through.

The male directors are the youngest of those in the two groups. Claude Lelouch will be 86 this year, and William Friedkin will be 88.

Of the actors, Michael Caine is 90, George Chakiris will soon be 91, Leslie Caron is 92, Gene Hackman and Joanne Woodward are 93, Don Murray will soon be 94, Ann Blyth will soon be 95, and Eva Marie Saint will be 99 in two days. Glynis Johns, who is the oldest living acting nominee, will be 100 in October. Margaret O'Brien, who is the longest lived since winning, is only 86. She had just turned 8 when she won her honorary Oscar in early 1945.

And win their Oscars way, way younger - Hackman and Woodward are about the same age.

My bad. I thought I edited out all that after I realized that's what you said. I missed the first line the first time around.

I hate working with quotes. I always screw something up when I do.

Before getting to Leslie Caron (the earliest living Best Actress nominee), you have:

Angela Lansbury (1944)
Ann Blyth and Angela Lansbury (1945)
Nancy Olson (1950)
Lee Grant (1951)
Terry Moore (1952)
They were all Best Supporting Actress nominees.

Another factoid:

Glynis Johns at 98 is the oldest living previous nominee. She is, at present, the 9th longest lived Oscar nominated actor or director behind Luise Rainer, Olivia de Havilland, Kirk Douglas, Gloria Stuart, George Burns, Lillian Gish, Juanita Moore, and Eddie Albert. Michael Anderson, the longest-lived director, who died in 2018 at 98, is currently 10th. He is followed by Lilia Skala, Carol Channing, and the still living Eva Marie Saint at 94.
Yes, that is what I said. Those are the living Best Supporting Actress nominees all from earlier than the earliest Best Actress nominee.

Even older than Glynis Johns are documentarian Joe Mendoza, cinematographer Bill Butler, writer Norman Lear, producer Walter Mirisch, and sound editor Peter Berkos.

Supporting Actress nominees have quite the lifespan.

Before getting to Leslie Caron (the earliest living Best Actress nominee), you have:

Angela Lansbury (1944)
Ann Blyth and Angela Lansbury (1945)
Nancy Olson (1950)
Lee Grant (1951)
Terry Moore (1952)

I was also curious about the most recent years where all 5 nominees aren't alive:
Best Actor 2020 (Chadwick Boseman)
Best Actress 2012 (Emmanuelle Riva)
Best Supporting Actor 2017 (Christopher Plummer)
Best Supporting Actress 2007 (Ruby Dee)
Best Director 2001 (Robert Altman)

Thanks for updating, but please fix the ongoing typo - it's Browne, not Brownie in 1977.

I guess I always just assumed that Roland Joffé was an old stuffy Brit. He's only one year older than David Lynch and Oliver Stone, when means when he was nominated for The Mission he was 41 to their 40 (or so) while Allen and Ivory were in their 50s. When he was nominated for The Killing Fields, he was 39 in a field that included Woody Allen (then late 40s), Robert Benton and Milos Forman (early 50s), or David Lean (late 70s). He got invited to the party as a young man.

And, y'know, then not much after.
