This was well known when the Academy nominated him for Best Director for Tess (1980) and when they nominated him for Best Picture for The Pianist (2002) for which they awarded him Best Director. Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson were among those leading the standing ovation they gave him in absentia for that as seen in the clip below. It's more than hypocritical to now spit on him for the same thing they forgave him for all those years ago.

Maybe, but it would look bad if they kicked out one convicted sex offender and not the other. It would be very tough to justify keeping Polanski over Cosby.

Low-hanging fruit to make them look like they are doing something after their own president was "exonerated" of sexual harassment charges.

I'll guarantee that they got together to expel Cosby and someone with a Polanski-axe to grind thought it would be the perfect opportunity to target him and no one wanted to look like they were defending him, so he went.

Polanski's expulsion looks and feels like an afterthought. They have had over 40 years......
