That's an interesting way of viewing it. You could certainly put Brokeback Mountain, 12 Years a Slave, The Revenant, 3 Billboards, and parts of Babel into that category, just in the past 15 years.

3 of the last 10 movies to win Best Motion Picture: Drama have ended up winning Best Picture (Argo, 12 Years a Slave, Moonlight).
