Hopkins, whose seven of eight nominations are for film, is up against the powerhouse performances of Riz Ahmed and the late Chadwick Boseman, so it's not like he can sail to victory unlike Close who is up against weaker competition.
Close, unlike Jodie Foster, who they also love, and Hopkins, does not have a DeMille. Eight of her fourteen nominations were for TV work and one was for writing a song for Albert Nobbs. Two of her three wins were for TV. The Wife was her only win for film.
