A very big question. Luminaries like Soderbergh and PTA couldn't break through the barrier. But can the branch really omit the near-universal critics' choice in the category (and a widely held choice in film, as well)?

In the old "blackball Gordon Willis" days, they'd have done it without blinking an eye. But these times may be different.

Somehow, I hadn’t realized until I saw this announcement that Alfonso Cuaron is the credited cinematographer for Roma. That branch had always been picky about directors who shoot their own movies. Do we think this leads to a snub in the category, or is this movie big enough to break that rule?

First side comment: Paddington 2 was a perfectly pleasant little thing, but the critical obsession with it and the Grant performance simply baffles me.
