Thankfully Netflix only have the North & South American rights to Happy As Lazzaro (and Girl which isn't something I'd be likely to watch anyway).

Word on distribution, at least in the United States:

Amazon - Cold War
A24 - Climax, Under the Silver Lake
Bleecker Street - Arctic
Cohen - Ash is Purest White
Focus - BlacKKKlansman
IFC - The House That Jack Built
Kino Lorber - The Image Book
Magnolia - Shoplifter
Netflix - Girl, Happy As Lazzaro
The Orchard - Birds of Passage
Sony Pictures Classics - Capernaum, Everybody Knows

There's usually more word on distribution.

Always funny when the worst film (this year being Capernaum wins a prize) whilst some of the most acclaimed (Ash is Purest White) walk away empty handed. Cannes wouldn't be the same without this ongoing anomaly.

A link to critics ratings of the Cannes selections. Asian cinema in the competition seems to be outpacing everything else:

Also, a link that I meant to post earlier but forgot, about the 'silent womens protest' on the red carpet:

Perhaps von Trier should change his name to Lars von Troll, it would a good fit and he'd gets lots of publicity which he so obviously craves.

What I admire so much about Lars von Trier is that he’s made a couple of masterpieces, a couple of sadistic failures, and a couple of noble misfires... but nobody can agree which is which. I haven’t loved a film of his in ages, but he’s some kind of artist. But trolldom always corrupts the appropriate targets. Some people shitpost, some people premiere movies at Cannes in the name of free speech.

Haven't got to keep up with the festival as much as I would like, but it sounds like a very good one.

Very good reviews for Hirokazu Kore-eda's Shoplifters, Alice Rohrwacher's Happy as Lazzaro, Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War, Jia Zhangke's Ash is Purest White and Spike Lee's BlacKKKlansman.

Doesn't seem like there have been any outright disasters yet, a la the Sean Penn movie from a few years back, or the Gus van Sant one from a couple of years ago.

von Trier's latest has received scathing reviews and very negative reactions. When he is going to grow up. He hasn't made a decent film since Manderlay (and I'm in the minority with that view) an nothing approaching greatness since Dancer in the Dark. Doesn't he realise that cinema of the provocative has finished and moved to the internet.....

Asghar Farhadi's Everybody Knows gets underwhelming reviews from THR & Variety. The Wrap, however, loved it. Also, Focus Features have picked up the rights for most of the English speaking world. Don't know how many people are aware but Netflix was/is threatening to purchase a swag of Cannes titles. This one in particular was actually named. Good to see they didn't get there way.

A very eclectic lineup of jury members and I must say the most interesting group in years.

A good summary of the festival from Peter Bradshaw:

I'll add that I'm also interest in the new Kirill Serebrennikov film (his previous was the little seen The Student) & Matteo Garrone, which knowing my luck won't screen at the upcoming Sydney or Melbourne film festival but will end up at the Italian film festival whilst I'm out of the country on holidays  .

Not the most inspiring bunch of filmmakers but I guess you take what you can get. And besides as good or even great as some contemporary filmmakers are they aren't a patch on the mostly deceased legends.

Nevertheless I look forward to the new films by Stéphane Brizé, Jean-Luc Godard, Jia Zhang-Ke, Kore-Eda Hirokazu & Alice Rohrwacher. Will have to wait for responses to the other films to pipe up my interest.
