This gives me mixed feelings. I'd love to see Sally Hawkins win an Oscar, but not necessarily for a wordless role.

Except that several theater chains have a very strict no admittance policy on R films.

I don't doubt it's going to be huge, quite possibly the biggest mass appeal hit since Titanic to also be an Oscar front-runner. But how are they going to get around the R rating for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence and language to sell it to all those girls and boys?
They're probably already watching Game of Thrones.

I just watched the trailer for 'The Shape of Water' and I think this thing looks like it's going to connect. All of the story ingredients look there for a crossover between the popcorn crowd and the art house crowd. It looks like a world out of Jean Pierre Jeunet with a mute heroine like Amelie. There's a touch of alternate history to it. And while Guillermo Del Toro hasn't had a hit in some time, there's a sense of it not being his fault like Peter Jackson's reclaiming of The Hobbit franchise robbed him of his valuable time. I think we're underestimating it. It looks like it could be up for Picture, Director, Screenplay, Score, Cinematography, Film Editing, Art Direction, Costume Design, and Visual Effects, and perhaps someone from the cast.
That someone from the cast sure looks like Sally Hawkins. But my biggest takeaway from this film's reviews is this film is going to have broad-scale appeal. It's a Beauty and the Beast story told right. It's going to appeal to girls. It's a Guillermo Del Toro story with a weird alien thing. It's going to appeal to boys. It's historical. It's going to appeal to adults. And more importantly, we shouldn't be asking "Can the Academy take Guillermo Del Toro seriously?" when they basically already did. Pan's Labyrinth was a heavy at the 2007 Academy Awards. Had they expanded the roster to ten, it's inconceivable it wouldn't have made the cut which means it would have had one of the biggest totals of the morning.

Starting off as 97 on Metacritic. Lots of enthusiastic raves. So, if anything, the advance word undercalled it.

From these reviews. it's not hard to see at least close to double-digits in nominations. Picture/director Iook very likely. A wildly-praised mute female lead is Oscar catnip. Both Jenkins and Shannon, respected veterans, are getting great notices -- they could be the first double-supporting-actor nominees since, I believe, Keitel/Kingsley in Bugsy. And the film's prospects below the line seem enormous: cinematography, production design, both sound categories -- and Alexandre Desplat could be in line for a second win, given initial reactions.

Of course, wins are a long way away...but if Del Toro can get to the victory circle, it'll be a remarkable case of three life-long friends all triumphing in the directing category inside five years.

The main thing, though: the movie sounds exciting, and Venice has once again launched Oscar season with a bang.

Oscar winner Sally Hawkins? I love the idea of that. I thought she should have won for Happy-Go-Lucky.

It's great to see del Torro back on track after those souless big budget Hollywood films he has been churning out. This really sounds like it is up there with his best work Pan's Labyrinth & The Devil's Backbone.
