The Insult is probably the least seen of the nominees. I understand it opens in the U.S. this week and will be released on DVD/Blu Ray in the next few months in the U.S.

I am looking forward to seeing it. I'd never heard of it until Italiano mentioned it a few months back.

I liked it - and it was a reasonable hit here in Italy. The moment I saw it, I knew it would be nominated. But of course now I should see the other four (which for once are all supposedly quite good) before I can make a prediction about the final outcome.

I predicted it solely because I saw it and knew it had a shot. I didn't predict The Square because I thought it would be too weird for them but lo and behold....

The Academy managed the nominate all 4 films I've seen from the 9. The only one I haven't seen is The Insult. Is it available anywhere?

As for predictions, I think with In the Fade out of contention, A Fantastic Woman should easily take this but if enough people see it, watch out for On Body and Soul (and apparently, it will be on Netflix next month!)

Don’t mention it. When I woke up, somehow I didn’t see that ‘Darkest Hour’ was up for Best Picture. For whatever reason, my brain didn’t compute it. I found out an hour later.

I was the only person to correctly pick the best supporting actress line-up. Based on two factors really - my dislike of The Big Sick and the fact that the Academy rarely nominated Asian actors meant a must deserved Hong Chau would miss out.

A couple of thoughts:

I wavered on putting I, Tonya into best picture, because I hadn't been able to fit it into screenplay. It was only then I noticed that, unless Molly's Game gets a surprise best picture nomination, Call Me by Your Name will be the only best picture nominee in adapted screenplay. This kind of thing happened occasionally, in adapted or (more commonly) original, back in the days of five best picture nominees, but, since the advent of the expanded slate, only twice have we had as few as two in any category (original, 2011 & 2015); 4 or 5 has actually been more common. So, I'm thinking this unusual (unprecedented) fact creates special circumstances for I, Tonya (and The Post) to compete for best picture, despite what's been a serious handicap of late.

I don't know if it's that we're on to something or that we just talk too much amongst ourselves, but I note that a lot of us are omitting Mary J. Blige, despite her precursor run, and including Michael Stuhlbarg, despite his lack of same.
