Noms are tomorrow. Damn, this is getting intense.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Lady Bird
Get Out
Mudbound
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The Shape of Water

(This category. PHEW.)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Timothée Chalamet - Call Me By Your Name
Gary Oldman - Darkest Hour
James Franco - The Disaster Artist
Daniel Day Lewis - Phantom Thread
Jake Gyllenhaal - Stronger

It's hard to tell if Kaluuya is a nonstarter. If 'Get Out' does so well with them that they give it an ensemble nod, then I suppose he can sneak in. After all, 'The Screen Actors Guild' is a very socially conscious group. It all depends if Day Lewis is name-checked here. His film and 'The Post' were both late screeners, so who knows? Also, I'm betting on Gyllenhaal being that odd-man 'Emily Blunt' nom that doesn't make the final Oscar Cut. (Without the BAFTA nod, of course.)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Margot Robbie - I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Jessica Chastain - Molly's Game
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Damn right, I'm going that bold in predicting that Streep is shut out. Oh yeah, she'll still get in for that Oscar nod. But not here. Judi Dench could even upset her. After all, "Dame Judi" is still pretty popular with these blokes. Regardless, someone will take Meryl's SAG spot.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Armie Hammer - Call Me By Your Name
Willem Dafoe - The Florida Project
Jason Mitchell - Mudbound
Richard Jenkins - The Shape of Water
Sam Rockwell - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

If Stuhlbarg is nominated alongside Hammer, then there's no way CMBYN still "doesn't have any chance" at hitting ensemble. If TSOW can get 3 acting noms including ensemble, then I don't see why CMBYN can't. I don't care If the cast is comprised of only 6 people. Strangers things have happened. But alas, I'm not entirely sure this is happening. I feel like the SAG could fall for Mudbound.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Tiffany Haddish - Girls Trip
Allison Janney - I, Tonya
Laurie Metcalf - Lady Bird
Mary J. Blige - Mudbound
Octavia Spencer - The Shape of Water

Self-Explanatory.

SAG nominations come out tomorrow. This is what I'm looking for...

This year is overflowing with contenders for Best Ensemble, and in a year where the Best Picture race is all over the place, this matters. Right now there are roughly seven films in the running for Best Picture: 'The Shape of Water,' 'Dunkirk,' 'The Post,' 'Lady Bird,' 'Get Out,' 'Three Billboards...' and 'Call Me By Your Name.' With the exception of 'Dunkirk,' they are all possible contenders for Best Ensemble. Every single heavy in the race is gunning for this award. That wasn't the case last year, when 'La La Land' wasn't really in the mix or the year before where 'The Martian' and 'The Revenant' were a stretch. This year, it's all of them, and they're up against films that won't win Best Picture but they will doubtlessly have fans in the Screen Actor's Guild like 'Mudbound,' 'The Disaster Artist,' 'Girls Trip,' 'The Big Sick,' 'I, Tonya,' even 'Battle of the Sexes.'

I feel very confident that 'Get Out' will be nominated. It's almost inconceivable to me that it missed out. 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' should be the kind of films that actors go for as well. I'm less confident about 'Lady Bird.' The ensemble is wonderful but sometimes smaller quirkier films don't go over like you think they will. For example, 'Juno' failed to get a nomination in a lineup that instead went for 'American Gangster' and '3:10 to Yuma.' And 'The Post' certainly seems like the kind of film they would honor...if they've had the opportunity to see it, and I'm not sure they have.

The biggest question mark to me is 'The Shape of Water.' We're early in the race for sure, but it seems unlikely that 'The Shape of Water' will miss nominations from the PGA, the DGA, or the BAFTA to me. If it can get a nomination for its cast, then that is a very wide range of support and perhaps we can start thinking about it as the new front-runner.

Yeah, but only about ten of us saw that one. As I said in my review, had they kept the original title of The Kaiser's Last Kiss it might have been a bit more of a success but there was nothing exceptional about the new title even though it had meaning to the plot.

If the Hollywood Foreign Press went for Blige, then the Screen Actor's Guild will as well.

Looks like no one is NOT predicting a nod for Streep. This is horrible for film. (Blaming the voters, not the predictors.)

While of course all the SAG categories are of interest, the solo acting ones aren't generally dispositive -- an oddball choice like Mirren/Woman in Gold or Blunt/Girl on the Train is highly likely to disappear when AMPAS offers a corrective ballot.

But Cast/Ensemble has been shown to matter or at least seem to. We've all understood that certain recent contenders were, for specific reasons, apt not to show up in the category: Gravity, The Revenant, La La Land. Yet when, in the end, these films failed to take best picture despite strong runs. the failure to show up at SAG always seems to be, in retrospect, where the air started to leak out of the balloon. All of which is to say, if you really want to contend for best picture, you'll want to grab a slot here.

Two things about that: 1) SAG has had an odd habit of putting ringers into the category, films with no best picture hope -- really bad ones like Bobby or Nine, in Harvey's heyday, but even recently with The Butler, Trumbo and Captain Fantastic. This can have the effect of reducing the number of slots available for this crucial precursor. 2) This particular year, there is a surfeit of films that qualify for/need this nod: Three Billboards, Lady Bird, The Post, Shape of Water. Get Out, Call Me by Your Name (I haven't seen the last one; does it maybe fall in La La Land "there's only a few characters" territory?). Maybe Mudbound, given how Netflix seems to score well at this Guild. Any one of these that fails to make the cut will suffer a crushing, perhaps fatal blow in the best picture race.

I don't have any conclusion to this. I could pick five, but it'd be guessing, because all six or seven need it (and that's not even considering the Weird SAG-y potential for them to throw in, from different spectrum ends, The Florida Project or Girls Trip). Listening to this category being read out may be one of the key moments of the season.
