One of the ironies is that his 96-year-old mother is still alive. He used to call her practically every day. Now when she asks why he didn't call, they tell her he did, she just forgot, one of the few good things about having dementia, I guess.

I don't have to, but...

Lois Smith is overdue for major awards recognition. She's done very well so far with all three groups listing nominees (Gotham, Spirit, Satellite). Probably not much of a chance for a win, but a nomination, yes.

Christopher Plummer would be a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. He would be the token representative of the ability to fix a problem at the last minute and still meet an iron-clad deadline.

Andrew Garfield gives an Oscar bait performance in a weak year for lead actors, he'd be as decent an also-ran as any of the other possibilities beyond Oldman and Chalamet. Besides, I have a personal reason for wishing his character does well with voters.

Just over six weeks ago, my cousin Joe, born a year and two weeks to the day after me and my oldest friend in the world, a retired Naval Commander and CPA, suffered a stroke while at the hospital for a minor procedure. He woke up with breathing and feeding tubes, unable to see, swallow or breathe on his own. There's been no change. His family is still hoping for a miracle, but I think he'd rather be with his wife Ellen, who he lost 8 years ago this Christmas and whose grave he visited whenever he was home. In the eight years since her death, he's traveled all over the country and the world, frequently driving four hours each way from western Pennsylvania to Long Island to babysit his grandchildren. The likelihood of his coming out of this is not good, but if he could he would want to escape that hospital just as Garfield's character does.

These discussions on low-buzzed contenders are pointless. They're not going to pan out.

People who vote to nominate Streep this year, like they did last year...these people are the worst. Wasting a nomination on Streep when a more deserving actress could get a major career boost. They're basically limiting the best actress category to only 4 spots up for grabs.

But surely Holly Hunter (or even Julia Roberts for Wonder) would get in ahead of Melissa Leo in a film that know one much has seen and would have to be at the bottom of most screener piles?
