I thought Cameron Diaz retread as well. Also, the Dafoe award reminded me of John Malkovich winning for playing himself in Being John Malkovich.

OK, I have to be honest, my first reaction was, critics trying to assert their coolness. A descendant of Cameron Diaz/There's Something About Mary '98.

She was funny, I guess, though VERY one-note. And it's hard for me to imagine AMPAS going for a golden shower. But the NYers have proven they see a few millennial movies. (And it keeps either Metcalf or Janney turning the year into a runaway.)

I'm rather astonished by this. He's been the subject of blogger-hype since Cannes, and he's perfectly good, but I don't see him as any kind of juggernaut (and, in my mind, he's already inferior to Rockwell, with several other candidates not yet seen by me).
But, he feels like the sort of respected actor who people want to see win an Oscar, is giving a performance different than what we expect, and could the only way to honor a film that a lot of people seem to love.

I really thought Michael Stuhlbarg would be getting cited here. I still think he could win the Oscar actually.

Dunkirk's cinematographer is Hoyte van Hoytema.

There are couple of other contenders: Call Me By Your Name's cinematographer, I found out, is actually Apitchatpong Weerasethkatul's regular cinematographer. It would be cool to see him get nominated. There's also Darius Khondji for The Lost City of Z.

The awards are today?? The NBR awards were Tuesday??

Why don't they move them up to October next year?

I'm told Morrison is the first-ever female cinematography winner. I have to assume the vote was contentious, having taken almost 40 minutes, way more than any other award so far.

Whatever they're voting on next, it's taking them a half hour.

Well, kudos to Sabin, for being up so early to track these from the start. I'm three time zones further east, and I slept in past the first three awards. (Though I did expect them to be further along. They were allegedly starting at 10AM Eastern, but don't seem to have given out their first prize till 11.)

Nothing terribly interesting/surprising so far.
