Also Shape of Water, Darkest Hour and I, Tonya were completely omitted, while Phantom Thread and The Disaster Artist made a good showing. So, surprises at either end of the spectrum.

NBR Predictions

Post by Mister Tee »

So, the year’s first set of predictions. A bit like opening the first Christmas gift – you know it’s all going to start coming fast and furious once you begin.

Things to note about NBR (back in its long- traditional position, leading off the season):

• It’s not your father’s NBR – the group that picked Far from the Madding Crowd, A Room with a View and Driving Miss Daisy (and would have fawned over Darkest Hour this year) is no more…No Country for Old Men and Her put an end to their stuffy old reputation.

• They do, however, have new idiosyncrasies, some of which won’t figure in this year’s picks (there’s nothing from Eastwood, the Coens or Spike Jonze, three long-running enthusiasms), but some of which likely will (never bet against a Warner Brothers film making the cut).

• Sometimes they pick a best film and then a ten-best list; sometimes the best film’s included in the ten.

• They’re not averse to bending rules – if they need to, they’ll declare someone who’s been around for years a Breakthrough performer. (Speaking of bent rules: there’s some dispute whether Lady Bird counts as Gerwig’s first film, since she’s listed as co-creator of 2008’s Night and Weekends.)

All that said, my idle speculation about what they might honor this year:

Best Film: The Shape of Water

Darkest Hour

Get Out
Lady Bird
Mudbound

Best. Sup. Actor: Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name)

Best. Sup. Actress: Allison Janney (I, Tonya)
(ru: Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird), Leslie Manville (The Phantom Thread))

Best Director: Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk)
