The way I look at movies is changing rapidly every year. I find more to appreciate, less to outright dismiss, but enthusiasm is an increasingly rare thing especially as it competes with changes in life. Which makes me cherish that enthusiasm even more. To the best of my recollection, these are the movies I saw in 2016 on this rating scale:

***** A masterpiece. Confident I'll be taking it with me for the rest of my life.
**** Excellent. Quibbles don't seem to matter.
*** Must see. A very strong achievement, worthy of praise if not adoration.
** Good. Plenty to recommend if ultimately mixed.
* Worth seeing. Some elements strong enough to warrant recommendation.
O Not recommended. Ultimately, not enough of interest.
OO Terrible. Every year, I find fewer and fewer films to hate. I saw three of them this year. I was dragged to all of them.

*****
None, but if forced to answer what my favorite film of the year is, for me it's La La Land so I may as well place it here.

****
Arrival
The Lobster
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight
Toni Erdmann

***
Deadpool
Hell or High Water
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Jackie
Morris From America
Silence

**
Captain America: Civil War
Everybody Wants Some!!
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Swiss Army Man
20th Century Women

*
American Honey
Café Society
Certain Women
Doctor Strange
The Edge of Seventeen
Elle
Fences (on the basis of performances)
Hidden Figures
How to Be Single
Lion
The Love Witch
The Meddler
Moana
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Southside with You

O
Captain Fantastic
Hacksaw Ridge
Hail, Caesar!
Florence Foster Jenkins
Loving
Nocturnal Animals
Sully
Zootopia

OO
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Suicide Squad
X-Men: Apocalypse
"How's the despair?"

For me 2016 has been one of the best years ever for cinema. For some reason the treats just kept coming all year round and a notable number of outstanding documentaries.

01. Elle (Paul Verhoeven)
02. A Quiet Passion (Terence Davies)
03. The Bacchus Lady (Je-yong Lee)
04. Paterson (Jim Jarmusch)
05. The Death of Louis XIV (Albert Sera)
06. Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade)
07. The Diary of Anne Frank (Hans Steinbichler)
08. Uncle Howard (Aaron Brookner)
09. 24 Weeks (Anne Zohra Berrashed)
10. De Palma (Noah Baumbach & Jake Paltrow)

Hate leaving off other films that would usually make my top ten in a lesser year: Being 17 (Andre Techine), The Childhood of a Leader (Brady Corbet), Helmut Berger, Actor (Andreas Horvath), I, Daniel Blake (Ken Loach), Jackie (Pablo Larrain), Kedi (Ceyda Torun), Love & Friendship (Whit Stillman), Manchester by the Sea (Kenneth Lonergan), Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (Fenton Baileu & Randy Barbato), Mr. Church (Bruce Beresford), O.J. Made in America (Ezra Edelman), Personal Shopper (Oliver Assayas), Rosalie Blum (Julien Rappeneau), Sieranevada (Cristi Puiu), Things to Come (Mia Hansen-Love) & Train to Busan (Sang-ho Yeon).

In roughly preferential order ...

Things to Come (Hansen-Løve)
Elle (Verhoeven)
Christine (Campos)
Journey to the Shore (Kurosawa)
Love & Friendship (Stillman)
Always Shine (Takal)
Everybody Wants Some!! (Linklater)
No Home Movie (Akerman)
The Illinois Parables (Stratman)
Moonlight (Jenkins)

I still have plenty to catch up with, too.
