I am. While the BAFTAs are considered just another Oscar precursor - and they know it, and sadly they like it - they are still European, and in Europe - except maybe by some "trendy" critics of the latest generation - Mad Max Fury Road could never be taken seriously. But, I mean, it still got several technical nominations, and I don't have anything against it (though, honestly, Art Direction? Costume Design..?).

As for Charlotte Rampling - well, no, sorry. Till yesterday, we were all making the Emmanuelle Riva comparison to predict her nomination here - now suddenly we have all forgotten it... Let's try to be rational, at least once in a while. Riva was even less British and more French than Rampling is, let's face it. And even by French or international standards, while enormously talented, Riva has never been a star of Simone Signoret-caliber - certainly less than Charlotte Rampling, even in UK. Still, not only she was nominated here - she even won. I certainly agree that at the Oscars Rampling could easily get the spot Maggie Smith has taken here, and one can only hope that the Academy won't give Vikander two nominations... but it's not like this snub doesn't mean anything.

Helen Mirren also should be worried - if she even cares.

Overall very good. Looks like I will have to see The Big Short sooner than later now.

I don't think Charlotte Rampling was so much snubbed as she was edged out by Maggie Smith for the old lady's slot, but as Precious Doll points out, her career over the last 15 years has been mostly in French, not British or for that matter American, cinema. She, Maggie Smith and Lily Tomlin are all competing for the same slot at the Oscars as well.

Speaking of old ladies, it's nice to see Julie Walters finally get some traction for Brooklyn. Like Thelma Ritter in All About Eve,
she's missing from the second half of the film, but as much as we'd like to have seen more of her, she does so much to enliven the early section of the film that she's unforgettable.

Too bad Tom McCarthy isn't nominated for Best Director, but he is nominated for his screenplay for Spotlight, so that's something.

Despite my disdain for Mad Max, I am not celebrating its lack of nominations for either Best Picture or Best Director. After being reminded that George Miller accepted his Golden Globe win for producing Babe in a pig mask, I am relieved that I won't have to watch him accept a BAFTA, and hopefully not a Globe, Oscar or anything else either, in that hideous mask Tom Hardy wore at the beginning of the film.

Lots of curious things here.

George Miller and Tom McCarthy miss out on Best Director, but Adam McKay is included. Neither Fury Road nor The Martian are nominated for Best Picture, although Ridley Scott does earn a Director nomination - but is it just BAFTA nominating another Englishman as often happens?

It's also strange to note Carol not nominated for Best Music.

After that PGA miss, it's very nice to see Carol back on top, getting nominations in virtually every category possible. (EDIT: Except Score.)

It's also worth noting that this is the first place where Mad Max has missed BOTH Picture and Director.

Spotlight also missed Director, something which doesn't seem LIKELY to occur with Oscar, but since I raised the possibility a day or so ago, at least might now merit a fraction more discussion.

Geez, these groups really aren't helping us to get any clearer picture of Supporting Actor, are they? Two nominees -- Del Toro and Ruffalo -- have been MIA with the precursors so far, despite being in the conversation since their movies opened.

I would love for this to be Oscar's Adapted Screenplay lineup, with Carol, Steve Jobs, and Room -- one of which seems on the verge of being dumped -- all making the list.

In today's category fraud news, Vikander was the one who got the bump up to lead, but they still bought the Mara fraud in support. This situation has basically been confusion all season long, and I truly just hope Oscar's resolution is anything other than "the studios get what they want everywhere." (But, of course, you already knew that.)

The Rampling snub really shouldn't be that surprising. Her career revival over the last 15 years or so has mainly been a result of French cinema.

The English film industry as a whole have always undervalued her.
