It's only talk, and a lot of the analysis in this article is dubious to say the least. But it appears there's significant opinion the expansion hasn't broadened appeal but has diluted the value of a nomination, so what was the point of it?

I'd be happy to see a return to classic mode, but this is hardly a well-thought-out plan. The original move was made in panic -- in reaction to a particularly off-year -- and this appears to be the same. Would they have bailed after 2012, where most of the nominees grossed well north of $100 million?
