Haven't seen The Duke of Burgundy yet. Not a big fan of Victoria but the score is one of the year's best for sure.

Neither of the best scores I heard this year -- Nils Frahm's for Victoria nor Cat's Eyes' for The Duke of Burgundy -- are here. *shrugs*

That's interesting you say that, because now that it's been ruled eligible, I still think it could be the winner: it's prominently featured in certain key spots, I imagine there will be some groundswell of support for an "about time" Oscar for Ennio Morricone at 87, I doubt voters will make much distinction between the original pieces of music he wrote for this and the music cues from other films, and the competition to my eyes (or ears, rather) isn't all that strong this year.

I agree with you though, the hurdle will be that large chunks of the movie are devoid of music. And Carol's score is indeed stronger and more prominent overall.

For the life of me, I just don't see The Hateful Eight getting in. The score is excellent but if memory serves it's barely in the film. It's in the overture and intermission. It leads us into the film but it doesn't play a major role. Carter Burwell, FTW.
