Also, I think rolo and I were the only ones to predict Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night.

Mine was less of a prediction and more me trying to will the nomination into existence. I was not going to see her get snubbed again after she came so close with RUST AND BONE.

Now I will really have to see American Sniper... At least the directors proved indifferent to American flagwaving (though the writers didn't) and pickled Bennett Miller's subtle work on Foxcatcher over Eastwood's swan song.

The absurdity of having more than five Best Picture nominees: we get one with ony one other (and very minor) nomination. I know that it happened (twice, I think) even under the five-slots format, but this year it's really ridiculous.

Surprises? Dern, no Lego Movie, and - to my personal relief - no Gyllenhaal for his unconvincing, juvenile imitation of a sociopath. No Rene Russo, sadly.

I still think that the Academy will see through Ida (the stereotypical "foreign movie" one has to admire) and that it won't win the Oscar - but I must admit that the (deserved) Cinematography nod makes its chances stronger.

I watch this on Good Morning America. Fortunately I didn't have a shoe in my hand to throw at the TV with stupid comments like Chris Connolly's "Marion Cotillard got Jennifer Aniston's slot"
