BEST DIRECTOR

The predicted nominees

1. Paul Thomas Anderson - Inherent Vice
Is an acquired taste but has many admirers in the Academy. The “There Will Be Blood” nomination may have proved he may be more in AMPAS wheelhouse with previously published material.
2. Bennett Miller - Foxcatcher
Two films in a row have received Oscar recognition and this one has many anticipating its arrival. I think Sony Pictures Classics knew what they were doing with the push back.
3. David Fincher - Gone Girl
Big loss under his belt for “The Social Network” and some feel he missed for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Based on previous material, that is very popular, this could be a slam dunk for him.
4. Tim Burton - Big Eyes
With no nomination in director yet, this has been a long road coming for many. This project, seemingly very un-Burton, may have all the makings of a multiple Oscar nominee.
5. Stephen Daldry - Trash
With getting nominations for “The Reader” and in Picture for “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” – this has taught me to never underestimate the power of Daldry until further notice.

Other top-tier contenders

6. David Ayer - Fury
Showed much promise with “End of Watch” and this World War II original film may have some legs on it, based on synopsis alone.
7. Christopher Nolan - Interstellar
With “Gravity” winning Director, this may put the Academy in a better mood for science fiction films. Nolan has been passed up too many times in this category to be considered fair.
8. Alejandro González Iñárritu - Birdman
Hasn’t been back to the table since “Babel” and with this quirky comedy, I’m excited to see him come back in AMPAS’ graces.
9. Rob Marshall – Into the Woods
Misfired with “Nine” and “Memoirs of a Geisha” – This will prove that “Chicago” was no fluke if done properly.
10. Angelina Jolie - Unbroken
This prestigious picture has many excited but the director’s branch isn’t kind to the actors-turned-directors, especially when they’re female. If Barbara Streisand had a hard time, then Jolie may find it even more difficult.

Also in contention

11. Saul Dibb - Suite Française
12. Richard Linklater - Boyhood
13. Jason Reitman - Men, Women, & Children
14. Ridley Scott - Exodus
15. Tommy Lee Jones - The Homesman
16. Michael Cuesta - Kill the Messenger
17. David Cronenberg - Map to the Stars
18. Ned Benson - The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby
19. Edward Zwick - Pawn Sacrifice
20. Tate Taylor - Get on Up
"Men get to be a mixture of the charming mannerisms of the women they have known." - F. Scott Fitzgerald
