"Alone Yet Not Alone" is a worship song from a Christian movie. It's so obscure that it has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the person who wrote the song, Bruce Broughton, is a previous Oscar nominee for Best Original Score for Silverado.

Question regarding Lawrence and Cooper: Has it happened before that a couple of actors receives Oscar nods for the same film, just to be both nominated the following year once again working together?

I could see Sally Hawkins as a surprise winner in Best Supporting Actress. This got buried in the Golden Globes reaction thread, but (like June Squibb) she could very well benefit from the "I-can't-decide-between-Jennifer-and-Lupita-so-oh-what-the-heck-I'll-vote for Hawkins" camp.

I had a feeling that Tom Hanks would be excluded in Best Actor. I should've posted that. Conversely, I never thought that Meryl would miss out on a nomination, especially after I actually saw August: Osage County. It was never going to happen. I just thought it was Amy Adams who'd be squeezed out, not Thompson. I wonder if Meryl's NBR speech had any effect on Thompson's chances after all.

On the whole, the nominations went about as expected. But here and there, some surprises, and I think the answer to Mister Tee's question about whether voters thought for themselves is closer to "yes" than "no."

I'll start down ballot and say that for me, two of the most shocking exclusions were 12 Years a Slave in Cinematography and Original Score. I'm not going to get all doomsday and start acting like anyone should stick a fork in the movie's win chances, but I also have to say that these were two categories where the movie was widely expected to appear, and it was rather bafflingly omitted. (Most of us had it pegged for Sound Mixing as well, but that was a more iffy proposition.)

In contrast, American Hustle had a great morning, carrying along nominations for all three on-the-bubble actors. (I do wish those outrageous hairstyles had gotten in though.)

In the major categories, I have to say I was a bit proud some of my hunches came through -- mainly that Robert Redford and Daniel Brühl were never the locks people bafflingly claimed them to be, that Paul Greengrass was vulnerable in Best Director, and that Sally Hawkins would hold on. I do so wish that I had hung on to my prediction for Meryl Streep, though the fact that it was Emma Thompson excluded caught me by surprise.

It definitely must be a disappointing day for the Saving Mr. Banks crowd -- thought of as a possible Best Picture candidate, excluded for what was thought to be a very likely Best Actress bid, placing only in Original Score. And, by proxy, Tom Hanks has to be content to cheer on his Captain Phillips crew, with nary a nomination to show for either of his award-bait turns this year.

My biggest disappointment was the exclusion of Inside Llewyn Davis in the major categories -- not even the writers went for it! On the flip side, Her placing in Production Design and both music categories was a totally rewarding surprise.

I wished, too, that James Gandolfini could have had a sendoff nomination, but the size of the movie and type of role were always going to be a hurdle.

In the specialty categories, Stories We Tell seems from the same stripe as other critically hailed docs ignored by this branch, though the popular phenomenon that was Blackfish seemed like it would be right up their alley. The Grandmaster scored deservedly in Cinematography and Costume Design, but was left out of Foreign Language Film. (I watched the film last night, and honestly, had I seen it before I made my predictions, I might have left it out of Foreign Film, for being less narratively driven than voters in this categories usually like. But, alas, Wong Kar-Wai gets ignored again.) And the Monsters University Animated Feature omission proves once again that this branch doesn't always default to Pixar when second tier sequels are in play.

I scored 3/5 in Original Song -- about as well as I expected to do in that category, though as I noted, the slate did feature one movie of which I had never heard, Alone Yet Not Alone.

The Makeup Branch: ruining the lives of Oscar completists since 1981.

And that's what I got for now.

The most nominated films are the Best Picture nominees:

(10) American Hustle, Gravity
(9) 12 Years a Slave
(6) Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska
(5) Her, The Wolf of Wall Street
(4) Philomena
(3) Blue Jasmine, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Wolf of Wall Street has five too many nominations; American Hustle has three too many and August: Osage County has two too many. Other than that, not a bad list.

Some random thoughts.

- So Jonah Hill is now a two-time Oscar nominee. Warm flashback to Superbad days.
- Jackass is an Oscar-nominated movie franchise. Yikes.
- David O. Russell directed four acting nominees in four categories last year, the first time that has happened in 30+ years - then does it again the following year. Pretty sure every actor in Hollywood is clamoring to get into his next project.
- Tom Hanks and Joaquin Phoenix get the boot in favor of Christian Bale and Leo, a really tight category.
- Spike Jonze does not make the Director list, a real shame.
- Philomena survives with some major nominations, happy for Steve Coogan.
- Dallas Buyers Club ends with entirely too many nominations.
- Alfonso Cuaron could conceivably walk home with three statues come Oscar night.
