The Original BJ wrote:I rewatched the nominations announcement from last year just to refresh myself on how they did the non-alphabetical thing, and I noticed something I didn't especially register at the time: a lot of the on-the-bubble and/or surprise nominees were saved until the end of the categories.

Haneke and Zeitlin were the 4th and 5th announced Directors. Phoenix was the last Actor. Riva and Wallis were the 4th and 5th Actresses. Adams the last Supporting Actress.

This wasn't a tactic put into place in every single category -- Best Picture, for instance, led with Beasts, and saved Argo for last. But it definitely seemed like there was a least some effort made to keep suspense high while the categories were being read, as there was in 2011, when Extremely Loud & Incredibly Closed was announced dead last among the Best Picture nominees.

So, maybe something that might be repeated tomorrow?
Is it confirmed they're repeating the "no particular order" method? I heard that somewhere, but nothing official. (I also heard opting to do it that way last year was an Academy decision, not a MacFarlane one -- it had seemed so in tune with his casual approach that I'd assumed it was his idea)

I'm too sluggish to type out my full predictions; you can mostly consult BJ's list and get what I'd have put down. (I know this is hardly the first time we've had similar takes, but, it verges on scary: we match 19-for-20 in acting nominees -- the only difference being that I threw Oprah out for Sally Hawkins instead of Julia Roberts. We also match 5 for 5 in costumes, of all random things)

I'm most interested to see how best picture shakes out -- if indeed there's a possibility a bumper crop paradoxically yields fewer nominees. And even if we go to the max or close, there are as many as five films that might or might not turn up...a far cry from the "Winter's Bone or The Town?" choice three years ago.

Final predictions with commentary (and some snark thrown in).

PICTURE
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska
12 Years a Slave
The Wolf of Wall Street
(alts: Philomania, Saving Mr. Banks)

DIRECTOR
Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity
Spike Jonze, Her
Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
David O. Russell, American Hustle
Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street
(alt: Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips)

ACTOR
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
(alt: Robert Redford, All is Lost)

I truly feel like this category could contain a jaw-dropping omission, given the level of competition. But I'm just going to stick to my initial instinct back when I saw All is Lost and leave off Robert Redford.

ACTRESS
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Sandra Bullock, Gravity
Judi Dench, Philomania
Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks
(alt: Meryl Streep, August: Osage County)

If Meryl Streep does get in, I'm going to kick myself for having faith in her all season long, and dropping her at the last second. But momentum seems to be against her and with Amy, so...

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
James Gandolfini, Enough Said
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
(alt: Daniel Brühl, Rush)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave
June Squibb, Nebraska
Oprah Winfrey, Lee Daniels' The Butler
(alt: The Protagonist According to Tracy Letts, August: Osage County)

I realize I didn't predict either of the heavily precursored category fraud candidates. Which is stupid, because I'll be wrong. But I'm just not feeling either of them.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
American Hustle
Blue Jasmine
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

ANIMATED FEATURE

ORIGINAL SONG
"Amen," All is Lost
"Let it Go," Frozen
"The Moon Song," Her
"Ordinary Love," Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
"Young and Beautiful," The Great Gatsby
(alt: "Atlas," The Hunger Games: Catching Fire)

I feel like I'll be lucky to score 2/5 here. I fully expect a couple songs I've never heard of, maybe even a movie I've never heard of either.

Yes BJ!!!

Gravity for Special Effects is the only thing I'd bet the mortgage on right now!

It seems like people have very different ideas of the word "lock."

I guess in my book a lock is Helen Mirren in The Queen. Or The Incredibles in Animated Feature. Or The Return of the King in Visual Effects. The kind of nominee that you look at and think, there is absolutely no way that loses unless the space-time continuum rips.

I don't view "Ordinary Love" as being even remotely at that level -- I've well learned that even my own predicted frontrunner in that category is more than vulnerable. (Even The Great Gatsby in Costume Design, though a very likely frontrunner, wouldn't be something I'd bet the farm on at this point.)
