Yeah, scoff at the people who love the movie (and I will), this is not a Tea with Mussolini situation when it comes to year-end awards.

It's true. But in this case - and I'm not saying that he actually realizes it - he may be closer to the truth. Dench is supposed to be really good in it (I say this based on the Italian critics who saw Philomena at Venice and generally liked it, and trust me, they aren't that easy to please), and at the Oscars the movie itself may get one or two nominations more than just Best Actress - which it definitely will get.

The HFPA loves Philomena. Per In Contention's Gregory Ellwood, it's a lock for a Best Picture - Drama nod along with 12 Years a Slave and Gravity while Dench leads Blanchett, Bullock and Thompson in that order for Best Actress - Drama. So we shall see what we shall see.

I truly hope everyone presenting the Best Director prizes this season has fun pronouncing the phrase "David O. Russell, American Hustle." (Sounds like a sequel to Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, does it not?)

Magilla, I love your unyielding faith in Philomena. It brings back such fond memories of Les Misérables, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, and other pet favorites you stuck with through thick and thin, never deserting them when the going got rough, even up until the end.
