It's been ever thus. Did the 1929 Academy judges actually see Mary Pickford's pathetic performance in Coquette or did they see and vote for it anyway because they knew the reigning queen of Hollywood wanted it?

Harrison Ford is one of those ideas that has at least some life on other Oscar-blogging sites, and you just hope it's fantasy.

For the record, the people in charge of these awards are swearing they saw Wolf of Wall Street. To me, it's just ludicrous Tapley is the one going after this, when he belongs to the Broadcasters, who, yeah, technically saw The Shipping News and Nine, but didn't see what everyone else saw -- total busts -- and put them on their best picture slate because, well, they were expected to be there. The line between that and what he's accusing this group of doing with Wolf seems pretty thin to me.

I couldn't agree more, but there are those who thought Ford was good, so good that he has, in fact, been campaigning for an Oscar nod. I suspect, though, that the Satellite nomination will be it for him.

That doesn't surprise me since screenings just started over the weekend and I'm sure ballots were due before then.

I'm more shocked by the lack of Joaquin Phoenix.

No love for August: Osage County other than Meryl and Julia. Otherwise nothing stands out as either an unexpected endorsement or major snub.

It seems these nominations were posted (on the organization's website) with incomplete info (note particularly the absence of Cuaron or McQueen under best director). The list has since been substantially expanded, and pretty much all the "snubs" were added.

There seems to be a far greater attempt this year to "conform", ala BFCA, which eliminates the amusing arbitrary quality these nominations used to have. It doesn't change the fact that they're meaningless in any grand scheme.

Where the heck is Jared Leto in Best Supporting Actor? These nominations are as obnoxious as ever. Why not just extend each acting category to ten spots so they can completely cover their bases?
