Very quiet this year. Some interesting choices, but it seems that it's not a very compelling year.

American Hustle!!!!!????

Anyone have the vote counts? This I gotta see.

Eric, you may be on to something with your cinematography call: throwing in To the Wonder as a co-choice enables critics to fudge the CGI-or-not debate while still honoring Lubezki.

NYFCC don't veer too far to the left of Oscar, but it's fun to hope they will anyway.

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave (Blue is the Warmest Color; Inside Llewyn Davis)
Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron (Steve McQueen; Abdellatif Kechiche)
Best Screenplay: Before Midnight (Her; Blue Jasmine)
Best Actress: Adèle Exarchopoulos (Cate Blanchett; Brie Larson)
Best Actor: Bruce Dern (Robert Redford; Oscar Isaac)
Best Supporting Actress: June Squibb (Léa Seydoux; Scarlett Johansson)
Best Supporting Actor: Michael Fassbender (James Gandolfini; Sam Rockwell)
Best Cinematographer: Gravity + To the Wonder (Nebraska; Prisoners)
Best Animated Film: The Wind Rises (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty; Frozen)
Best Non-Fiction Film: The Act of Killing (At Berkeley; After Tiller)
Best Foreign Film: Blue is the Warmest Color (The Past; Drug War)
Best First Film: Fruitvale Station (Blue Caprice; Sun Don't Shine)

Yeah, I guess I see 12 Years taking the title too, but only after its frustrated partisans have lost a lot of other battles on the way.

New York's been more mainstream than Los Angeles over the past 5-10 years. LA almost always finds room for at least one foreign winner (usually in Best Actress or Supporting Actor) and often has a couple of winners that aren't really on the Oscar radar at all. New York generally only has off-the-wall winners when they can't come to a consensus between the Oscar contenders.

I do wonder how Supporting Actor will go. I could see Leto getting it for surprising everyone with a performance that no one expected--his career up until this point has been, putting it kindly, unimpressive--but I could also see Fassbender getting it kind of the way Christian Bale did a few years back--for being an actor's actor, giving another impressive performance in a career that routinely balances blockbusters with smaller, more personal projects.

These seem more like Oscar predictions than NYFCC predictions, no offense.

I don't have time to predict right now, but I wonder where the foreign lingo or off-the-wall winner will come from. Will it be NYFCC or LAFCA? Who will it be?
