Jafar Panahi accepts and thanks the Academy for his invitation via Michael Moore's website:
"I would like to sincerely thank the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for inviting me to join their organization. I am especially grateful to Michael Moore and the documentary branch for nominating me.

"It’s an honor for me to join such a prestigious organization, and I am proud to accept the invitation on behalf of the large family of the Iranian filmmakers, who have steadfastly represented the best of Iranian arts and culture despite all the limitations they have been subjected to.

"I understand this membership affords me the chance to see some of the best films every year and vote on their merits. For someone in my situation who has been banned from making films, viewing the works of international colleagues is an opportunity that I would deeply cherish. If I am forbidden from making films for twenty years, I can at least share the joys of filmmaking in a vicarious manner."

Probably just those two generations. At one point from the late 1930s to early 1940s all members of SAG were members so her grandparents John Barrymore and Dolores Costello would also have been members. Her father John Drew Barrymore AKA John Barrymore, Jr. may have been as well, but probably not - he was too much of a maverick.

How many generations of Barrymores have been in the Academy? I'm pretty sure the Drew is a member and I'm sure Ethel and Lionel were.

Does Jack Huston's induction make the Hustons the first four generation AMPAS family?

There are very good names in this list. It is of course a mostly American list, but there are respected members of the European film community, too (the Italian cinematographer is excellent). So one wonders how some winners can still happen.
I've always thought that, while people blame the older actors for the bad outcomes, the producers/PR people -- those who put together the "packages" that dominate mainstream Hollywood -- were the people most apt to vote for, say, Sandra Bullock. (Not that there aren't people with inadequate taste in all branches)
Aren't the non-affiliated groups such as producers and pr people limited to voting for Best Picture?
For nominations, but not for final voting, which is where a lot of the damage is done.

I think the idea is not just bringing in "young blood" but new and differing perspectives. People like Lance Henriksen and Danny Trejo may not be new and young, but certainly bring a different perspective and style to the Academy and may be open to awarding a different kind of film than if you merely let in "prestige artists"

I missed Emmanuelle Riva, but at least she has done something of note recently, but Grodin and Henriksen seem to run contrary to the idea of inducting "fresh blood" into the Academy.

Milla Jovovich is a laughable choice.

I find it interesting that Prince is on the list. I'm sure this is a "Shaming" invitation to try and encourage him to join.

But look at all those cinematographers and documentary filmmakers. Those groups are growing very large...it's rather surprising considering the actors branch was frequently invigint the most. And this is about 100 more than last year's list of invitations in number. I'm guessing the Academy is trying to broaden its memberbase so it isn't presumed stodgy...

Charles Grodin is 78. Lance Henriksen is 73. Better late than never I suppose.
