This was my only gripe with the film. I could only handle so much "let's follow the kid through the entire school with the camera" before I wanted to throttle Van Sant.

Yup. I think Breaking the Waves and Dogville are the best of their respective years, and Dancer in the Dark is world-class as well.

On the OTHER hand, I think Manderlay is a snooze, Melancholia utter nonsense, and Antichrist one of the worst experiences of my entire life. And I don't just mean MOVIE-GOING experiences. I mean experiences, period. As in, it's a wonder I didn't require psychological help after enduring it.

It should be known as "that Netflix movie where Charlotte Gainboroug drills a wheel into Willem DaFoe's leg, crushes his testicles with a small rock, beats him off until he ejaculates blood -- and then he goes for a walk."

RE: Elephant
I should reconsider because even though it's beautiful visual storytelling, it's mostly in the service of nothing. I need to see it again. And by "I need to see it again", I mean "I probably never will."

RE: Dogville, von Trier
Lars von Trier is the only filmmaker in the world right now where a person can cite some of his movies as some of the best ever made and others as some of the worst...and there is zero consensus as to which ones are which. Some think Antichrist and Dancer in the Dark are his best, others think they're his worst. And these are fans! I love Breaking the Waves and Dogville, I don't really care for Dancer in the Dark and Melancholia, and I hate Antichrist.

I feel like I may be the only person who likes Lars von Trier around here. I only ever read negative things about him although I do recognize that he is very misogynistic, but women in trouble are so much more watchable than men in trouble.
