This is an EXCELLENT (and very sad) observation. You can hardly pick up Variety or The Hollywood Reporter without hearing mention of Crash and Oscar. Brokeback? Hardly a word gets written about that film anymore. It's sad to say, but close really doesn't count with Oscar. I think of it this way: Brokeback Mountain had the Oscar from about the Venice Festival (and definitely from the NY/LA crix awards) until Oscar night. Crash has the Oscar from then until eternity.

Of course Brokeback will be remembered even without that trophy. But Crash will ALWAYS have a very prominent (though dubious) platform because of its victory.

Man, has an Oscar victory ever stung this much?? I really need to get over this . . .

Why are you guys considering Lackawanna Blues in this poll? wasn't it a made-for-tv movie?

Recently I saw A History of Violence and I'm still amazed with the quality of the films and performances in competition last year. Fiennes, Bana and even Mortensen could have easily got a nod in any other year for their great great performances (actually, as usual, it is a shame the final result, the winner I mean). Only the actresses were almost weak as a whole with few exceptions (the non-nominated Bello comes to mind inmediatly). Still have to see The New World. Right now I'm a little bit skeptical considering my experience with The Thin Red Line wich I just don't like.

What I still don't understand (or don't like - don't consider it fair) is the actual impact of an Academy Award. By the end of last year, Brokeback was almost a cult film, the film everyone was talking about and it didn't feel like a trend, people were saying they were affected by it while people (the few ones) that actually had seen Crash consider it an ok film with "a great script". Now, as time goes by, Crash is being considered more and more as "such a great film" and no one talks about Brokeback except for few mentions and now it seems ok to make believe you don't remember it and to refer to it like "what was that? the gay cowboys film?". Academy doesn't know the hurt it made to itself and to movie history. It is a lie that "no one remembers who won last year, least of all ten years ago". Maybe we are the minority that tries hard to get all the info on academy and movie history but the film that gets the title of "Best Picture of the Year" becomes a cultural statement of its time (with very few exceptions). Now 2005 could have been the year when the Academy made history by giving its biggest award to the first gay-oriented nominated film but instead it is... well what it is...

From the nominees, Munich was the one that impressed me the most but as a cultural statement, and a necessary one, Brokeback should have won, no matter how hard we look among stranger-more rare-hard to find-so-called-cultural options. A film with both popular, comercial and critics success and with cultural resonance should have been the best of the year.

(Note: Know my english is getting lousier every time I write down. Sorry in advance).

How wonderful to see someone else finally recognize Sonia Bergamasco's outstanding performance in The Best of Youth. IMO, it was 2005's most underrated performance; I didn't expect awards for this lower-profile film, but she couldn't even score a single vote in the Village Voice poll, even when her costars did.

Best Film:
1- The New World (Terrence Malick)
2- The Best of Youth (Marco Tullio Giordana)
3- Munich (Steven Spielberg)
4- The Beat That My Heart Skipped (Jacques Audiard)
5- The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (Tommy Lee Jones)
6- Cache (Michael Haneke)
7- The White Diamond (Werner Herzog)
8- Millions (Danny Boyle)
9- Murderball (Henry Alex Rubin, Dana Adam Shapiro)
10- Kings and Queen (Arnaud Depleschin)

Runners-Up are in the films of 2005 Top Ten List thread.

Best Director:
1- Terrence Malick, The New World
2- Steven Spielberg, Munich

4- Jacques Audiard, The Beat That My Heart Skipped
5- Tommy Lee Jones, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Best Actor:
1- Romain Duris, The Beat That My Heart Skipped
2- Damian Lewis, Keane
3- Tommy Lee Jones, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
4- Bruno Ganz, Downfall
5- David Strathairn, Good Night and Good Luck.
Tip of the hat to Luigi Lo Cascio, Joaquin Phoenix, James McAvoy, Barry Pepper, Heath Ledger, Mathieu Amalric Eric Bana, and Idris Elba, many of whom would've won in any other year.

Best Actress:
1- Q'Orianka Kilcher, The New World
2- S. Epatha Merkerson, Lackawanna Blues
3- Emanuelle Devos, Kings and Queen
4- Maria Bello, A History of Violence
5- Dina Korzun, Forty Shades of Blue

Best Supporting Actor:
1- Jeff Daniels, The Squid and the Whale
2- Alessio Boni, The Best of Youth
3- Ciaran Hinds, Munich
4- Ray Wise, Good Night, and Good Luck.
5- Michael Lonsdale, Munich
Daniels in Support is kind of an opportunistic placement, since I think an equal case could be made for him as Lead. But that category is an embarassment of riches--although he would've placed in that category too--so I'll put him here.

Best Supporting Actress:
1- Romola Garai, Rory O'Shea Was Here
2- Adriana Asti, The Best of Youth
3- Corinna Harfouch, Downfall
4- Laura Linney, The Squid and the Whale
5- Sonia Bergamosco, The Best of Youth

3- Millions
4- Forty Shades of Blue
5- Sometimes In April

Best Editing:
1- Munich
2- The New World
3- The Beat That My Heart Skipped
4- The Best of Youth
5- Cache

Best Score:
1- Munich
2- Sometimes In April
3- Millions
4- Forty Shades of Blue
5- The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
The New World had the best use of music, but most of the mileage was from Wagner and Mozart, although the music in the scene where John Smith visits Pocahontas in England and following that (up until the final sequence of Rolfe reading the letter to his son) is lovely, and I think it's actually Horner's music. It deserves a shout-out at least.

Best Art Direction:
1- The New World
2- Downfall
3- 2046
4- Good Night, and Good Luck.
5- Cache

Best Costume Design:
1- Munich
2- The New World
3- 2046
4- Kingdom of Heaven
5- Lackawanna Blues

Best Sound:
1- The New World
2- The Beat That My Heart Skipped
3- War of the Worlds
4- Munich
5- Good Night, and Good Luck.

Best Visual Effects:
1- War of the Worlds

Hopefully soon I'll be done with 2005, completing Foreign nominees and moving on to 2006. I can't believe I haven't finished yet. It's already mid-August.

I've updated my 2005 picks again.

Best Actor: Out with Jeremie Reinier for The Child and in with Jose Garcia in Costa-Gavras' best film in years, The Ax.

Best Supporting Actor: Out with Steve Martin in Shopgirl. In with Michael Kelly for Loggerheads.

Best Supporting Actress: Out with Shirley Henderson for Yes and Bertha Ruiz for Battle in Heaven. In with Tess Harper & Bonnie Hunt, both for Loggerheads, giving the sorts of performances that would have earned them nominations in the 70's or 80's but not these days when smaller films from small companies (in this case Strand) get completely overlooked.

I think Keaton wasn't nominated because her film wasn't that good, rather than for the placement of her category. Bello could reasonably be included in either category, depending on what argument you use.

I'll agree, too. Though I thought the film flattened out in the last reel (getting a bit too close to the type of film it had been sending up), for much of the way it was terrifically breezy fun that had both my wife and me laughing out loud. I'd never have believed Kilmer had such comic gifts; his line readings were funny throughout.

I don't recall anyone saying anything about the screenwriting in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang ! What a delightful treat to see Kilmer in this kind of role. The screenplay was what used to be called "snappy" and the film deserved more attention, we thought. What say you?

I wonder if it even matters really, but thecritic, last year's Star Wars was subtitled "Revenge of the Sith." Not "Attack of the Clones."
