Count me on your side man... I didn't like the film as much as everyone did. I think it's overrated, but Garner was great and I difinitely would have nominate her instead of Ruby Dee. The "belly-touching" scene says out loud "clip to use in the academy ceremony". Janney is great as always, filling the camera with her presence alone. Call me crazy, but I actually think that Garner (alongside Janney actually) offered one of the only performances grounded in reality in Juno. While I enjoyed the film, there was a sense of "Juno thinks she's too cool for school" and even, "Ellen Page thinks she's too cool for Juno" that kept running through my mind.
I liked Juno. She was a quick-witted, acerbic, and funny character and definitely reminded me of on-the-fringe grunge outcast girls back in high school, the ones who the jocks liked because she was no bullshit and the popular girls ignored because she didn't fit into the beauty paradigm. But I didn't necessarily see her as a real person. Vanessa's painful desire for a child and cookie-cutter default in order to mask the crumbling foundation of her marriage, seemed more genuine to me than Juno's seemingly blasé attitudes about pregnancy and abortion. This doesn't take away from Ellen Page's performance, which I thought was good. I think it has more to do with a slightly lopsided script.
One of my initial reactions during the first half hour or so of the film was that Juno McGruff was a manic depressive.

Gotta go with Vanessa Redgrave. She was wonderful but it was such a brief role. I think they chose the right Briony and I do not think any of the other nominees should have been excluded in favor of Vanessa.
