I think they've started expanding it again; It came back to my town (a town of about 170,000) last weekend to two different theatres, although I'm not sure how many screens it's on right now. If it gets the major nominations it's expected to tomorrow, it may go wide--its widest release so far has been about 600 screens, so there are plenty of small towns that haven't gotten it at all. But if it doesn't come back to your town, it's supposed to be on DVD on February 12, although Amazon.com is reporting that it's been pushed back to March 4.

For some reason, I was under the impression that you had seen it and didn't care for it.
Exactly. That DVD release date could be pushed back even further if the re-release is successful.

I don't think it would category confusion -- the whole wide stupid world, except for us and Michael Musto -- see him as Supporting -- but rather that not enough Academy members people saw Assassination of Jesse James and those that did didn't like it (a 2-and-a-half hour "arty" western).

After much internal debate and a number of changes while I was working on my final predictions, I think I've finally come up with the list. The hardest category for me to call was supporting actor. There are 7 individuals that could all end up nominees. I think Javier Bardem is the only lock in the category, but the other four could be one of Casey Affleck, Hal Holbrook, Paul Dano, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tom Wilkinson or Tommy Lee Jones. Ultimately I left Hoffman and Dano off the list. I think Dano will get in, but at whose expense? Either Tommy Lee Jones or, I'm going to try calling this one early: Casey Affleck. I think category confusion might cut him and I could easily see him missing out altogether.

Anyway, here are my final predictions, but I have to say this has been the most difficult year to predict in my memory. I fought internally for days over all of these and only finalized yesterday evening. But, we have to cement sometime and I guess with less than 24 hours to go, it was the best time.

Not likely?! I'd say that it's very possible... Nobody wants to say it because, as you pointed out, we all refuse the idea that Blanchett can be nominated for that unwatchable movie (while I personally liked her in I'm Not There). But it can happen, definitely - a left-field nomination, and as such it seems to me that she has more chances than Linney, Bonham Carter (both probably more deserving) and Knightley.

Best Picture

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Into the Wild
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
*There Will Be Blood

Best Director

*Paul Thomas Anderson
Coen Bros.
Tony Gilroy
Sean Penn
Julian Schnabel

I feel more confident with my Director pix than with Best Film. I'm sticking with my contention that "Into the Wild" and "Diving Bell" will make Best Picture, and "Juno" will miss. And should this happen, it will be that rare 5-for-5 film/director year. If "Juno" makes it, Best Director still stands. And if there IS an out-of-nowhere choice... well, David Cronenberg is as good a choice as any, unless Ridley wants to spoil things again.

If the Oscars were tonight, "No Country" and the Coens would be likely winners. They won the precursor tally race for sure. But have they peaked? I see "There Will Be Blood" charging over that hill just yonder, and I'm wondering... could this be the fiercest, most exciting Film/Director race since Eastwood/Scorsese? (And now that people are just discovering "Diving Bell", figure that may be a factor of sorts in the race... assuming it's nominated.)

Best Actor

*Daniel Day-Lewis
Four others

I may eat these words later, but why there are still so many people who think Johnny Depp is making it is beyond me. And I also predict this will be more of a Helen Mirren year than a Forrest Whitaker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jamie Foxx year... meaning, people will be thrilled for this imminent victory, rather than gripe about the inequity and predictibility of it all.

(It hardly matters, but George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Emile Hirsch, and Viggo Mortensen will be the others.)

Best Actress

Cate Blanchett
*Julie Christie
Marion Cotillard
Angelina Jolie
Ellen Page

People don't want to predict Blanchett. They can't abide predicting Blanchett. They'd rather eat glass than predict Blanchett over Laura Linney, Helena Bonham Carter or Keira Knightly. It does feel wrong, doesn't it? Anyone remember last year's unlikely contender, the one that received a Globe and a SAG nomination? It was "Bobby" for Best Picture. That gave us a little scare, didn't it? And Blanchett may go the "Bobby" route. But she has also picked up a BAFTA nom. So, how many voters are simultaneous AMPAS and BAFTA members? How many are insufferable Anglosnobs? And how many are Blanchett lunatics, like their fellow fanboys on the internet? Maybe... MAYBE... just enough to put her over the edge. Not likely, but what's life and predictions without risk? Every Oscar slate provides one blast of stale air, and this could be it. If it happens... yup... I called it!

Best Supporting Actor

Casey Affleck
*Javier Bardem
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Tommy Lee Jones
Hal Holbrook

What to say, other than maybe Holbrook could be the Alan Arkin spoiler this year. (I wish I hadn't missed Into the Wild. Any plans on a re-release?)

Best Supporting Actress

Cate Blanchett
Ruby Dee
Catherine Keener
*Amy Ryan
Tilda Swinton

Okay, so Amy didn't exactly sweep the precursors. Or rather, she did but it wasn't a CLEAN sweep. But it feels a little like a Hillary Swank-Annette Bening flashback, with the journeywoman overtaking the veteran.

Best Original Screenplay

*Juno
Knocked Up
Lars and the Real Girl
Michael Clayton
The Savages

Good thing this is such a weak field. Juno retains its frontrunner status even if it isn't nominated for Best Picture. I don't really think Knocked Up will make it (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead will take its place), but I've been sticking with this prediction since last March and I can't abandon it now! If it happens, I called it.

Best Adapted Screenplay

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Into the Wild
*No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Zodiac

Talk about inverse proportions. This Screenplay category will be as classy and first-rate as the other one will be meh. Compare it to last year, when the opposite was the case.

No Country's win will either be a harbinger of things to come, or a "Nice try, Coen's! Here's yer runner-up citation" prize. Either way, it'll win.

I'll finish the other categories once I see what everyone else is predicting, and I get to crib off of you.

Is this a contest?

The big question-mark for many seems to be Into the Wild, but I feel pretty good about those predictions. For me, the bigger question is 'how big a bust will Atonement be?' It's still at least a competitor in plenty of major categories...but it could also be left out of all of them, leaving a surprisingly low nomination total...we'll see...

'The Bourne Ultimatum' (a movie I liked) doesn't have a D.P.. It has an A.C..

Also, I've changed my best actor lineup to Clooney, Day-Lewis, Gosling, Hirsch, and Mortenson.

Zodiac's doing surprisingly well in the guilds and he seems to fit the profile.

No it's not. It got one nomination. I hope you're right, but that statement isn't entirely true.

I wonder whether the Academy will give another Oscar to Blanchett for "impersonating" Bob Dylan. I did not like her impersonation of Hepburn, for which she undeservedly, IMO, got an Oscar.
I think she is talented, but she is "in" everything, and thus her appeal has worn thin for me.

Although I'm not done writing up my final predictions (the analysis is lengthy), I'm going to put my thought in stone right now.

I predict the odd-man-out director will be David Fincher. Zodiac's doing surprisingly well in the guilds and he seems to fit the profile.
