You need to be more specific. "Enchanted" and "Once" has several songs to choose from.

criddic, Hairspray and Elizabeth: The Golden Age weren't finalists for Makeup. And Spider-Man 3 wasn't a finalist for visual effects.

As close to impossible as there is this year I'm pretty sure, and if it really is missing in these 2 categories, your predictions would not be all the impressive because it would make no sense at all

Best Picture

Into the Wild
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

Even as I type this, the list seems too good for the Oscars (and I say this as someone who didn't really care for Michael Clayton). If I'm wrong, I think Into the Wild will be replaced with Atonement, not Diving Bell. Why? Years of disappointing Oscar choices despite any number of better films to choose from. Every time I try to convince myself that the Academy might finally be growing up, I remember nominations for The Green Mile, Chocolat, Seabiscuit, and Finding Neverland (just to name a few) and I recalibrate my expectations. The only reason I'm going with Into the Wild over Atonement is not because I'm giving Oscar voters credit for recognizing the superior film, but because I think the Actor's Branch will go apeshit for the Sean Penn "actorly" film. Plus it's cool to be "liberal" again. Isn't the natural progression Nancy Pelosi...Dixie Chicks...Sean Penn?

Best Director

Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Sean Penn, Into the Wild
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood

I think this will be the lineup regardless of what happens in Best Picture and it will be one of the strongest lineups we've ever had in this category. If Atonement gets in for Best Picture (and it still could, people) then Schnabel and Penn will be the odd men out (since I still think Juno will make it). After all, it was the general voting population that gave it to Howard over Altman and Lynch. We shouldn't blame the directors -- sure they nominated Howard, but they also nominated ALTMAN AND LYNCH, and they had the good sense to pass over Howard before, unlike their brethren at the DGA who have given Howard TWO awards. I'm willing to give the directors credit for "growing up" faster in this category than the general voting population in Best Picture. And if Atonement is nominated for Best Picture, I'm looking to this branch to halt its progress by failing to nominate its Director, just like they did us that favor with As Good As It Gets, Chocolat, Seabiscuit and Little Miss Sunshine (and besides, they owe us one for not pulling their red light trick with Crash).

Best Actor

George Clooney, Michael Clayton
Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Ryan Gosling, Lars and the Real Girl
Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises

I think Hirsch will be left out despite the love for his film. He's too cute and this category is already too good looking for Oscar voters' taste. I wouldn't be shocked if they threw in an unkempt pretentious blob like PS Hoffman to stay true to their uneven gender politics (pretty girls can be good actors, but not pretty boys) and pat themselves on the back for nominating a "real actor." But of course, the last time they failed to nominate a SAG nominated lead actor while still recognizing his film, the director, the screenplay, and the two supporting actors, was when they left out Paul Giamatti in Sideways -- and he was more of a pretentious "real actor" blob than a pretty boy, so that gives me hope that Hoffman's smug puss will be watching the ceremony at home (if there is a ceremony of course). Voters might even go for an old favorite bore like Denzel, but either way, I can't see both Gosling and Hirsch making it in when they already have the brooding-cute Mortensen, the classy-cute Day Lewis and the King of Cute Clooney. Speaking of which, I wouldn't mind seeing McAvoy in here over Depp or Gosling, especially after his affable performance -- not in Atonement but in that Newsweek Oscar Round-Table -- and if his film gets in so may he, but then I can also see his film getting nominated without him. So better luck next time cute dude with an accent. Play a handicapped person (preferably a real life one) with some scenery chewing if you want to secure a nomination. These are the Oscars boy! Subtlety just won't cut it.

Best Actress

Amy Adams, Enchanted
Julie Christie, Away From Her
Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart
Ellen Page, Juno

Speaking of that Newsweek Round-Table, I've been ragging on Angelina Jolie for years, but her presence at the Table reminded me why we want her to show up at another Oscar ceremony. Or how much I wanted to fuck her on that table. Granted she plays second fiddle to the events in her film, but that's actually kind of impressive given the easy scenery chewing that snagged her an Oscar before. I'm so so sooo tempted to replace Adams with Blanchett but are they really going to give Cate a second useless nomination for crap like Elizabeth? And of course as I type this, I remember Jamie Foxx in Collateral. But that's the thing. Foxx's "useless" nomination (we all knew he was really in there for Ray) was in the slumming supporting category -- never mind the fact that his role was actually a lead (oh these Oscar musical chairs, better grab one quick Casey Affleck; any chair will do) -- and Blanchett is really in the race this year for I'm Not There. They can stick Foxx in supporting as spill-over love for his lead performance, but will they really stick Blanchett in the LEAD CATEGORY as spill-over love for a supporting performance that is not even a lock to win? I find it hard to believe, especially since the Oscar Caste System dictates that Lead is superior to Supporting. Meanwhile, Adams was the sole nominee for Junebug. She had SAG and critics awards to help her then, and now she has critical acclaim and a box office hit. Can the latter make up for no SAG love? I'm betting on it -- though I'll kick myself if Laura Linney gets in since she was my first choice here. Of course, this is me totally ignoring the other big rule of the Oscar Caste System: always go with the monarch, especially the British ones (maybe Adams is a better choice than Linney after all -- she at least plays a princess).

Best Supporting Actor

Casey Affleck, The Assassination of Jesse James
Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Hal Holbrook, Into the Wild
Tommy Lee Jones, No Country for Old Men
Tom Wilkinson, Michael Clayton

For some baffling reason, actors love PS Hoffman and he was in a bazillion films this year, so I couldn't decide between Hoffman or Wilkinson for the last spot. And then it hit me: our favorite Casey Affleck may actually be the most vulnerable here. I wouldn't be shocked if he was snubbed in favor of Hoffman but for now I'm sticking with him. Because if Oscar voters love anything more than letting a past lead winner slum in supporting in a subsequent year (Geoffrey Rush, Frances McDormand), it's letting a first time nominee's lead performance slum in supporting the same year (Rachel Griffiths, Haley Joel Osment, Ethan Hawke).

Best Supporting Actress

Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There
Ruby Dee, American Gangster
Catherine Keener, Into the Wild
Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton

I'm really the most shaky on this one. Blanchett and Ryan for sure, but the others are all vulnerable to Redgrave or Ronan, or both -- even without a nomination for their film (almost crazy? No, Almost Famous). And Kelly McDonald could also be a threat if they go for No Country in a big way. I think Swinton could easily lose her spot to any of those three -- Michael Clayton will be fine without her and they've passed her over for a nomination before. What's that? They can't just keep passing her over? Tell that to Maria Bello. But there are only so many times I can ignore those Oscar rules: always go with the monarch, even the one from Narnia.

Best Original Screenplay

Juno
Lars and the Real Girl
Michael Clayton
Ratatouille
The Savages

I did it the Javier Bardem way. I flipped a coin between Lars and Knocked up -- two films I can't stand, and the slightly less horrible film won. And I'm going with Ratatouille because it's superior to past nominees Shrek, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles in EVERY way. Which of course I just realized -- with the Oscars -- means nothing.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Atonement
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Into the Wild
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood

Just a hunch that Atonement will survive here, if nowhere else in the top categories. Oscar Caste System says great novels deserve screenplay nominations -- even if the adaptation sucks. And also because the name McEwan may remind some voters that some pretty good literature has come from the Irish.

(Just in case it wasn't obvious -- I'm making fun of the average Oscar voter and assuming they wouldn't know any better)

Best Foreign Film

The Counterfeiters (Austria)
Days of Darkness (Canada)
The Trap (Serbia)
12 (Russia)
The Unknown (Italy)

Best Animated Film

Persepolis
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie
