Re: The Nominations Announcement

Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross will be announcing. (The latter seems an odd choice -- she doesn't have much of a film career at all.)

EDIT: Apparently OscarGuy and I had the exact same thought in the same moment.

She is not pissing off Democratic primary voters in Queens and the Bronx.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Even after everything, "[The FBI] grew increasingly concerned about whether the president's actions constituted anti-American activity" is still a pretty mind-blowing sentence to read.

Re: Golden Globe reactions

The movie IS kind-of irrelevant, true - but hers is still the performance of an intelligent, subtle professional. I wouldn't have a big problem with her losing again, don't get me wrong - but her losing to Lady Gaga?! It may not seem absurd to some on this board, but it would seem absurd to ME (and...

Re: Green Book reviews

If you read Nick's biography on IMDb. you'll see his early production work gave prominent acting jobs to Clarence Williams III, Paul Winfield and Louis Gossett, Jr. He may not be "woke" but he's not intrinsically racist either. Well by that logic, Trump gave jobs to Ben Carson and Omarosa...

Re: 2018 BAFTA's

Probably the biggest headline in Oscar terms has to be the mind-bogglingly bad showing for Black Panther, which nabbed a single nomination for Visual Effects, missing a lot of the tech categories where it's thought to be a strong candidate (Production/Costume Design, Sound). I expect the film to do ...

Re: WGA Nominations

Don't know if this is the place to post, but...Mark Harris is reporting that The Ballad of Buster Scruggs has (for reasons no one is explaining) been classified as adapted for Academy purposes. In case that has any impact on your Oscar predicting. Two of the six segments -- "All Gold Canyon&qu...

Re: DGA Nominations

Phantom Thread had the disadvantage of the late release date, however. A lot of those snubs were due to not having been seen enough, versus having been seen and not nominated. I know If Beale Street Could Talk played Toronto/New York, while Phantom Thread skipped the festivals entirely, but Beale S...

Re: DGA Nominations

I think If Beale Street Could Talk is done for at the Oscars. With PGA, DGA, and ASC all ignoring the film over work that was easily inferior, I have no hope that If Beale Street overcomes all this. I don't know about that. Just last year, Phantom Thread proved it's possible to overcome it. I rate ...

Lanthimos and Jenkins now feel like they’re both fighting for Oscar’s lone director-type slot. And Black Panther’s chances of actually winning Best Pictur...

Re: WGA Nominations

A couple inside baseball notes: A24 didn't send hard copy screeners to the WGA, only digital screeners. Obviously this didn't prevent one of its major contenders (Eighth Grade) from making the list, but it might possibly have cost the other (First Reformed). I think digital screeners -- an e-mail wi...

ASC Nominations

Alfonso Cuarón, Roma Matthew Libatique, A Star is Born Robbie Ryan, The Favourite Linus Sandgren, First Man Łukasz Żal, Cold War Although I lament the exclusion of If Beale Street Could Talk, this is quite a strong list. (And as with the ACE omission, it's another suggestion that Black Panther might...

I mean, Bryan Singer getting nominated at the DGA would be the most 2018 thing to possibly happen at this point, so maybe we should brace ourselves.
