It was alot simpler to write about Bob Sheppard. Steinbrenner's legacy was far more mixed (though not for Yankee haters, most of whom flat despised him). I'm finding younger Yankee fans are more effusive in their praise of him, because they know only the positive -- lots of winning, with George qui...

Not an easy year for me to decide. I didn't know until reading Inside Oscar that Agnes Moorehead had been the favorite -- which is odd, considering I'd been well aware that Rutherford was the front-runner a year earlier. I thought Moorhead was flagrantly over the top, but, then, I pretty much alway...

I think dws makes a strong point, that something like the Philip Seymour Hoffman/Doubt nomination is an even darker sign for how corrupt the system has become. This was a part clearly considered lead at the Tonys, that had no issue with a competitor from the same film, but simply went for the fraud...

I don't know if he's as famous as he used to be, but I think even those who don't recognize the name would know the voice of Bob Sheppard, the VERY long-time public address announcer at Yankee Stadium. His booming, stentorian tones announced the line-up from the early 50s through 2008 -- so he's re...

it seems like a very modest, cuddly film and might just be remembered warmly and fall through the cracks. Of course, that would also describe The Full Monty or Little Miss Sunshine. There's actually a segment of Oscar voters who PREFER warm and cuddly, certainly to anything visionary or cutting edg...

I think a lot of the discussion about Bening being "overdue" for an Oscar is a direct product of the media's infatuation with the Bening vs. Swank smackdowns, which have effectively managed to paint Bening as the big loser in her last two races. (Never mind that Hilary Swank was clearly b...

Yes, it's still ludicrously early to do any serious Oscar-prognosticating, but I've had a few thoughts percolating, and thought I'd throw them onto the screen. 1) The expansion to 10 nominees has the effect of starting the race earlier. I wouldn't be willing to push any of the year's releases-to-da...

IMDB says Branson and Forsyth...but I thought I'd seen other names in the end credits. Wherever it is is VERY rustic.

Well, considering I've grown up in the area or lived around these types of folks my entire life, I guess I'll have to see this in order to refute its stereotypes...My concern though is that this will be yet another stone thrown at the small Midwestern towns and cities because it's the only depictio...

None of these ladies is unworthy, but no one jumps out as outstanding, either. I'm with Italiano in finding Diane Cilento's saucy wench quite appealing. She didn't have the largest role, but her seductive quality was palpable. Joyce Redman was clearly recognized for being one-half of the most widel...

My reaction to Winter's Bone is, first, a sigh of relief, and then a solid round of applause. I had a real "Do I HAVE TO see this?" approach to the film -- having been burned by critics on far too many honest/heartfelt/boring tales of the backwoods. One wag saying it wasn't "quite as...

I like Elizabeth Mitchell, but her role in the last episode was so brief the nomination has a "So long and thanks for all the fish" feel to it. I disagree. Lovely scene. I watched it twice on air, choked up both times. But it was less than two minutes, and her only notable scene in the sh...

I'm a mere drop-in when it comes to TV, so I only look for validation of the few shows I watch. In that vein: I'm pleased, after three seasons, they've finally noted that Mad Men has 1) women and 2) a supporting cast beyond John Slattery. Really thrilled Christina Hendricks made it, esp. for for th...
