They might think Portman gave the better performance in this instance, or they might think it will do more overall good to the global image of the Academy if they give an award to a young actress presumably more popular with a generation they would like to reach out to. My favorite of his roles are Skidoo, the Black Stallion and Babe: Pig in the City. (and I have to admit he really nailed that Andy Hardy character too) Damien, I recently rewatched Breakfast At Tiffany's, for the first time on the big screen, and I found it a masterpiece, but I still maintain it wo...

I believe it must have something to do with the fact that the (non-musical) animated film that was originally going to be Rapunzel was scrapped after 3+ years of pre-production, and re-envisioned as Tangled . Costs from the first conception of the film are included in the budget of the completed fi...

If anything, most critics want to get people to see the films they like, so they vote for those films. If that includes AMPAS members who might otherwise ignore a certain screener, that's all to the good, but it's not their primary concern. I'm afraid that separate off-the-record conversations I've...

I thought that, a few spectacular set-pieces aside (the light-cycle chase being the most memorable), the effects in Tron Legacy , and particularly the attempt at making Jeff Bridges look younger, felt like a rush job. A creepy step backward in both concept and execution. I was pleased that some in ...

Yes, RainBard, Keisha Castle-Hughes did collapse, but Whale Rider isn't exactly True Grit. One film got one single nomination, the other got 10, anchoring a film that the Academy liked quite a lot. I was really replying to Sonic's argument that for a young performer "just being nominated"...

She may well win, but in the long-term maybe it would have been best for her career to have been placed in the Lead category and not win than to win in Supporting? Ask Anna Paquin about that. She parlayed her Supporting Actress win into a phenomenal career, mostly on television, but she has an Emmy...

Cannes Film Festival -- what's that? Competition, I've long thought. What point would the Academy see in honoring films that have already recieved arguably the only award that might be considered by a large number of observers to be as prestigious (or more presitgious) as an Oscar? Truth is, before...

He's someone I've been impressed by for a while. I first encountered his impressive mind making comments on the posts of a few of my favorite cinephile blogs (including our own Johnny Guitar's). I'm certainly intrigued to see what he'll be like on television - for the first time I find myself wonde...

Oscar got off to a rocky start with its acting nominations. As with Best Actress, there were five slots, albeit just three nominees. In that category Janet Gaynor took up three of the slots. In Best Actor, Richard Barthelemss and Emil Jannings were each nominated for two performances. The Academy w...
