Re: Trivia, if you please
By the standards I laid out, 2006 would actually be right up there with 2018, because the Documentary category includes at least Iraq in Fragments and possibly My Country, My Country. (I say possibly because I remember that film being a hybrid of English and subtitles, but my memory isn't remotely f...

Re: Trivia, if you please
Here's a question... Does this year boast the most nominations ever for foreign language films? Excluding the shorts, if you count up the nominations for Roma, Cold War, Never Look Away, Capernaum, Shoplifters, Border, Of Fathers and Sons, and Mirai, I come up with 20 nominations total. That seems l...

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation
Big stars ONLY. Everyone else, we're going to pretend they don't exist. https://variety.com/2019/film/awards/oscars-lady-gaga-kendrick-lamar-best-song-performers-cut-1203117143/ You wouldn't think any administration could rival the Trump gang for image incompetence, but John Bailey's been giving it...

Re: Reactions
I just realized that by Foy not getting in Supporting Actress, Chazelle fell short in being one of the few directors to get his actors acting nominations in all 4 categories. And he would have done this in just his first 4 films. Does anyone have the updated list of directors to achieve this? And w...

Re: Reactions
The answer to both is no -- but to the question, was there ever a time it MIGHT have happened? And maybe Liv Ullmann joining Bergman in Best Actress for Autumn Sonata, and Carmen Maura in Supporting Actress to accompany Cruz for Volver (to cite options where at least one candidate DID get an Oscar ...

Of Fathers and Sons is available to stream for free on Kanopy (for which you just need a library card from a participating public or university library to access).

Re: Unseen 2018 Oscar Nominated Films
Unfortunately...it has only two shows a day: 10:30 AM and 10PM. In my youth, I might have gone for the second, but not these days, especially that far downtown. I see an afternoon show once it gets into the weekend -- I'm directly on the movie's website, not sure what Moviefone/Fandango/anything el...

Re: Unseen 2018 Oscar Nominated Films
Can anyone tell me how/where to track down Border? A search on both Netflix-es (DVD and streaming) yield nothing. It apparently played in NY in October, but was barely seen by anyone. Help. Subsidiary question: what deal does the Swedish film industry have going with the make-up branch? Border is s...

2004 technically would qualify — The Passion of the Christ, A Very Long Engagement, and House of Flying Daggers — even though one of those was an American film.flipp525 wrote:Question: 3 foreign language films are nominated for Cinematography. Has that ever happened before?

Re: Reactions
When Marina de Tavira was announced early on (literally the second nominee read), my jaw dropped -- that's easily the most from-nowhere acting nominee I've seen recognized in my nearly twenty years watching this whole affair. I prepped myself for a morning full of potentially exciting surprises... ....

Re: Final Nominations Predictions
One last thought -- which honestly feels like we're going full circle to the conversation that began nearly a year ago -- is that Black Panther feels like it's in a more precarious spot than I think many in the media are admitting. I'm not brave enough to predict against it making it in Best Picture...

Re: PGA Winner
One widely-held theory that took a big hit tonight is the one that Green Book might have more easily prevailed in a five-wide Oscar field (especially if its competitors included Roma, The Favourite, and BlacKkKlansman, all of which have a degree of hipness to them, thereby giving the retro crowd a m...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018
Shoplifters is indeed a very fine piece -- I actually had the same reaction Mister Tee did in terms of wanting to see it again right away. I did so a couple weeks later, and was struck anew by how compellingly the film was constructed -- a number of things that took me a while to figure out on first...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing
The “let’s not rush to impeachment until we know all the facts” crowd isn’t going to have that many more legs to stand on at this point.
