Re: 2020 Oscar Nominations
Only four of last year's nominees have returned this year -- Anthony Hopkins, Diane Warren, Michael Menkler, and Oliver Tarney. That is the lowest number of returnees since the 2nd Academy Awards!

Re: Coming DVDs
It took the Sophia Loren remake to do it, but the 1977 Simone Signoret original of Madame Rosa has been given a 4K restoration by Kino Lorber and will be released on May 18. It has never had a DVD release. Glad to hear it. I almost never do this, but because of its scarcity, I watched the horrible ...

These awards continue to be useless and stupid.

Re: American Cinema Editors Guild or "Eddies"
rolotomasi99 wrote While the Drama Eddie nominees could transfer perfectly to the Oscars, I think MINARI will be replaced by PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN. I think Minari is getting nominated. I think it's currently the dark horse to win Best Picture and it's a perfectly paced little film. Promising Young ...

Re: CHASING COVID-19 VACCINE
Yeah, my second shot hit me hard too -- got it on a Saturday, and spent all day Sunday on the couch watching mindless movies with what is best described as the worst hangover of my life. Chills, headache, dehydrated, and no energy whatsoever. Woke up Monday feeling perfect.

Re: State of the Race
Sabin -- great post! You covered a lot of this in detail! I will point out that I think you underestimate Ma Rainey; it may have missed DGA and BAFTA, but it has hit every other guild out there, including all of the below-the-line categories. It could get a lot of tech nominations -- Makeup, Costume...

Re: BAFTA stuff.
OscarGuy wrote Sabin, they are useless as a predictor and the extent to which anyone cared about the BAFTA nominations, it was for their predictive quality. No one pays much attention to the Donatellos, Cesars, or any other European Award. We only pay attention to BAFTA now because it's a precursor...

And Lee Isaac Chung!Mister Tee wrote: Except for Nomadland, this list seems to come from a different world vis a vis BAFTA. Which is great; as it should be.

I'm thinking Fincher -- who seems more in line with the Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) or Ridley Scott (The Martian) type who gets left off at the last minute.Sabin wrote:I think Aaron Sorkin could get left off.

Re: BAFTA stuff.
I haven't seen a lot of this (including some films I've never heard of), but I love that this list is so idiosyncratic. It may be useless as a predictor, but I welcome uselessness in that sense. It is like these small pools of voters actually watched the films and really chose the best.

Re: PGA Nominees
Interesting to note, also, that those 2 that missed PGA in 2017 were pretty late releases that didn't pick up momentum until late in the game (Phantom Thread missed almost everywhere). So films like Da 5 Bloods or News of the World are really hurt by this. They had plenty of time to be seen.

Gee, I go away for a couple of hours and look what happens! I don't check this board nearly as much as I used to, mostly because I am sick of the toxicity and hateful comments made by some members. I've put up for years on this board for being an Ugly American, and the blatant homophobia, transphobi...
