Re: Your Oscar ballot
Actor: Cillian Murphy Actress: Lily Gladstone Supporting Actor: Robert DeNiro (close over Gosling and Downey) Supporting Actress: Emily Blunt (I would toss the entire lineup) Director: Christopher Nolan (or Scorsese) Original Screenplay: May December Adapted Screenplay: Oppenheimer Cinematography: K...

Re: Brutally Honest Ballots
I'm convinced that the publications who do these brutally honest ballots contact a bunch of voters and then pick the most outrageous ballots to share.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Leading Actor
I think Murphy will get this, and I am very happy about that. Giamatti is not bad, but the "best of the year!" acclaim he has gotten is a complete mystery to me. I really don't get it at all. Other than being, as some might say, a bit "cringe" in interviews, I don't get why Coope...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actress
I've said before that Oscars are often won on PR narratives as much as performances. Not always: voters didn't bite on Chadwick Boseman a few years back, and we all know how Glenn Close's nomination for The Wife worked out, but last year Michelle Yeoh, who had "great performance + Best Picture ...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actor
I might give this one to DeNiro, but Downey will be a great winner, and Gosling wouldn't be bad either.

R.I.P. Jaclyn Jose
Her biggest moment on the world stage was winning the Best Actress prize at Cannes in 2016; I'm sure anonymous1980 could tell us more about her career and her status in the Filipino film/TV industry. ---- Tragic Loss: Renowned actress Jaclyn Jose passes away at 59 In a heartbreaking turn of events, ...

This American Fiction win, which seems inevitable, is not going to age any better than Jojo Rabbit's.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Production Design
This should be Killers of the Flower Moon . Wild how other, less impressive Scorsese films made runs through the tech awards and this one won't win anything below the line. Between Barbie and Poor Things , I think it'll be Poor Things . The Barbie stuff is great but some voters may feel like they've...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography
But what if ASC follows its British cousins and goes for Poor Things? It's not as if the film isn't stunningly photographed -- I'd put the lighting of the skies in Lisbon up against any image in Oppenheimer . I would argue that is more (or as much) a function of the visual effects than the cinemato...

Re: Art Directors Guild Nominees
I knew very early that the race was going in a different direction, but I hate that Jack Fisk is probably headed for a fourth-place finish for Killers of the Flower Moon . He doesn't work a ton, and is getting up there in age, so this could be his last real shot at winning, and it is incredibly good...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actress
Not a lot to talk about it in terms of who will win; I have lots of questions as to why and how Randolph became the only choice. The movie doesn't know what to do with her, and I think that comes through a bit in her performance. I'm happy for her, and won't be mad at her win though. I guess I would...

Re: Category Fraud Alert (2023) -- Correcting Oscar
Gladstone - Lead Foster - Support Gosling - Lead Gladstone could go either way; I think there is an argument for Support, as the film by design centers the criminals (essentially pointing the finger at the predominantly-white audience members), but she has a point-of-view, she is a window to the nat...
