Not utterly. In 2001, his dissertation of 'A.I.' was some of the best film criticism of the year. He jumped aboard that movie before many others followes suit. Lord knows, he got it right before I did; that took two viewings. One could chalk it up to his nigh-deification of all things Spielberg, bu...

Anyway, I think the performances are all top notch. If I had to rank them they would be in this order. Jennifer Hudson . . . . . . . . . Keith Robinson Anika Noni Rose Eddie Murphy Jamie Foxx Beyonce Knowles Interesting. Maybe it's because I'm now so utterly disconnected from current pop music (I c...

Not exactly, but you could start with: no Brian De Palma films no Friz Freleng cartoons no James Benning films no Abel Ferrara films no Mitchell Leisen films (none he directed, anyway, nor any of the Cecil B. DeMille films he did the costumes for) Then you could just pick random masterpieces. McCab...

How ironic that Spain's official selection might well lose to a submission from Mexico that's a Spanish co-production set entirely in Spain. We'll see if it even gets nominated, though. It's an extremely violent film, with scenes that on the surface seem closer to the current torture-porn horror wa...

My big "huh?" this year are the SUPPORTING citations for Luminita Georghiu (sp?). Sure, she doesn't enter the 2.5 hour film until the 30 minute mark, but after that, she never leaves. How is she not a lead? Agreed. She may not be onscreen quite as much but she certainly has more lines tha...

Did you watch it with an audience, Reza? I saw it a couple weeks after its release in a well-attended theatre, and I'm sure a lot of my laughter was propelled as much by the phenomenon of group behavior as it was by the film itself. Sometimes I found myself laughing and not even knowing what it was...

Good comments, rain Baird, however, I found this logic to be a bit flawed. Would you have said the same thing if you were asked your opinion of a film that featured, say, Hitler in 1945, Hussein in the 1980's, or even, heck, Queen Elizabeth I after she offed her sister? That you don't have the righ...

Sheesh, the wealthy must really hate sitting among regular movie-going audiences. Yes, only the latest models of cell-phones go off in the middle of these screenings. ;) Actually I didn't go myself, but one of the local film bloggers plopped down the $25. Nice reaction and analysis, Sonic. I saw the film at what was probably an on-the-late-side-of-things critics screening in mid-September (after Italiano's review was posted here, but before Manohla Darghis's was published). I have to admit that the film, at least at that point, already didn't feel l...

The Original BJ wrote:but what's the point of it all?

And this one in particular could be used for practically all the man's films.

(My exclusions: the Limey, and perhaps King of the Hill and sex, lies and videotape which I haven't seen in years. And I haven't seen a few, most notably Schizopolis).

It was a big financial (and to a lesser degre critical) bust, at least in the USA. Now it feels like the greatest of Leone's masterpieces, but apparantly it was only treated that way in Europe until years later.
