Re: New Developments III

FYI, Katie Porter had to give up her House seat to run for Senate, as did Barbara Lee. I did the same as you, deciding last minute to vote for Porter to have a better chance at an all-Dem slate in the general. I was surprised how poorly the two women did. No surprise that the GOP voters consolidated...

Yes, and let’s hope that Ruben Gallego runs a strong campaign because Kari Lake would be far worse than Sinema.

Dune, Part 2

I figured this deserves its own thread, as it will likely get gobs of Oscar nominations next year. First off, this is NOT my kind of story with its wars and messiahs. Nevertheless it is a sumptuous cinematic experience. The visuals are even better than the first film with lots of artfully stunning s...

Re: R.I.P. Richard Lewis

I wasn’t a big fan of his standup, but I’ve really enjoyed watching him these past 20+ years on Curb Your Enthusiasm. He plays some version of himself. He’s neurotic but not the rapid-fire, manic-y neurotic from his old standup act. His relationship with Larry David feels like the most authentic rel...

In Hollywood there’s no such thing as too much ego stroking.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Adapted Screenplay

I think American Fiction has a very good chance here because, of these five films, it’s the one that really feels like a screenplay film, i.e., a film that any decent director with some good actors could make work. The others feel much more like directors’ films. What I think most viewers will remem...

Re: The Zone of Interest reviews

I saw it many weeks ago, and ranked it number two among this year’s Best Picture nominees. I think it’s an exquisite piece of art, beautifully photographed, and bone chilling. The sound design haunts me to this day. I’m very hopeful that it will win best sound.

Re: Super Bowl LVIII

Yeah, I was definitely rooting for the 49ers. Funny how you never find a game, or at least a close game, boring when your team is in it. There were plenty of chances for the 49ers to take this game, but they could never capitalize in a big way. That missed extra point turned the game on its head. Br...

Re: Category Fraud Alert (2023) -- Correcting Oscar

I think this is a good point. I'm due for a rewatch of the film however as the film recedes into memory the film doesn't really feel like DiCaprio's active journey either. He's as much a passive participant in his cruelty until the end. I agree. However, even though his actions are manipulated thos...

Re: Category Fraud Alert (2023) -- Correcting Oscar

I voted Lily Gladstone for supporting partly because she wasn’t on screen that much but mostly because her character didn’t drive the story. It was mostly about things being done to her, and her people. She was a pretty passive character until the very end—after she is no longer on-screen—when we le...

I didn’t watch live, but fast-forwarded through it yesterday to catch the baby boomer-friendly acts (LOVE that New Yorker cartoon) as well as a couple other performances. Tracy Chapman was and is such a great contrast to the pyrotechnic tendencies of so many performers (who have their place, of cour...

Wes, what are these strong feelings about? Were you personally crestfallen when Barbie didn’t get the noms for director and actress?
